Welcome to the forum

What year Ranger and what engine model?

Make sure wiring on the side of the transmission is still dry and tight

Cleaning throttle body?
So you are having an engine issue as well, or do your think it was an engine issue not a trans issue?

You should have a 4R55E automatic in a 1996 4.0l Ranger

I think the 4x4 used a different pan and so a different filter than the 2WD Ranger, but not sure if that was all years.

And transmission service was just based on "time to do it" or was it serviced because you noticed a problem or difference in operation?

There are steps to take after refilling transmission to make sure all air gets pushed out and is replaced by trans fluid, much like changing coolant.
You need to run transmission thru the gears to purge all the air, then check fluid again, it SHOULD drop.
Then refill to FULL line

So o took all proper steps to purge the line to get air an service was way over due trucks probably got close to 300000 miles on it idk when the last time it was done we bought it from a family member who don't remember if he had done it on this truck or not so it's been a fun jounery getting things tightened up an fixed but my wife uses this vehicle to drive back an forth to work everydau as it is our only vehicle at this time running i also have a 86 Ford ranger single cap v6 but it's my little project truck.

OK, so engine is stumbling on acceleration

Clean MAF sensor

Automatics slipping between shifts is often call "flaring", the band(brake) and clutch are not getting full pressure.

All automatics run on pressure, Reverse requires the highest pressure to engage, over 150psi, this is why an automatics first sign of a problem is often slow engagement to reverse, REVing engine helps because it raises pressure, but it eventually goes to no Reverse.

The pressure holds the bands(brakes), and releases and engages the clutches so transmission can select different ratios(gears).
There are no separate gears, just one gear with variable ratios

?? which issue, you need to describe the problem in a bit more detail if you can

i.e. when you put it into Reverse it is slow to engage
Or when putting into Drive it is slow to engage
When driving in Drive it "flares" when shifting from 1st to 2nd
If you drive in 1st and then manually shift to 2nd it engages quickly, no slip

ect...........
