So a couple people have mentioned useing 5-30 instead of the 5-20, and there was talk about different oil effecting mileage, ive been noticing my last few fill ups I just havent been getting the mileage I was before, ive been down to 13-14 ish mpg when I was up anywhere 15-17ish depending how I drove, could useing the 5-20 as it may be too thin be effecting my mileage?

the bulk oil we use at the shop is just as good as anything.

and dont compare beer to oil, its just not right.
You know what, your comments about my age are really tiresome since my grandfather calls me that and he is in his 80's. I don't care if you are ASE certified as I have friends who are as well and 2 out of 3 of them run amsoil too. In fact one of them was the one that told me to try it.

I'll make a deal with you, I will spend my hard earned money and buy you 5 quarts of oil with a filter (after the holidays) as long as you pay me for it, IF you have noticeable improvments in idle, engine temp (that will be tought this time of year I know) and fuel economy, although with your attitude, I am doubtful that you would pay me, or even admit that it made a difference.

I used beer as an easy reference because it is easiest to relate with your backwards way of thinking.....

i'm not as you say "indoctrinated" and have been told i know a thing or two about cars, i dont see the point.

used oil creates no waste anymore, most companys PAY the shop to pick it up!
you have no gain buy using any of these types of oils in any ranger lmao!!

now i know i just opened the floodgates and you will bash me in this thread and probley every other thread i post in from now on but it is what it is.

JUST OIL!!!!!!
Ha ha! We've argued this before, haven't we?

It's funny, you talk about parts and quality and the differences in things, but then act like synthetic oil isn't better -- yet critical applications anymore almost always call for it.

You ignore the economic and environmental benefits of extended oil changes and continue to argue tired old points that quite frankly I see as "points of pride" for you and NOT a reasoned approach. Disappointing from one who otherwise seems intelligent and well-educated but very human for all that, lol.

So, I'll drop out of this because unlike me, you will NEVER be convinced of anything. You have no proof that synthetic is not worth it, just a feeling.

You throw around your "ASE cert" like it's some kind of honor but I know lot's of certified folks in various things. Many of them, sadly enough, have only proved they are certified to pass the exam, not to work through problems. I hope you're not one of those but sometimes I wonder.

Were you scared by an "Avon Lady" as a child? (Some of them are kind of scary...) You seem to throw that around quite a bit as if somehow that trumps the technical considerations. I hope you get therapy because you keep doing that and I'm worried it's blinding you to really finding out the truth.

Final conclusion: you're often right, but on this, as on a few other things, you are dead wrong, try to prove your point with emotion and ignore arguments you don't like without evaluating them. I'm not impressed.

That's my final word, amigo, post away with your conventional oil drivel -- some seem to be enjoying it, lol.

hehehehehe...sorry, I am new here so I should just not comment, but I just hjave to...this is some funny stuff...hehehehe, dude's it's only oil and it's not worth rupturing a kidney or something while arguing your position. But keep on it makes for a good break out of the real world...

use wtf you want, then whoever's engine and tranny lasts 200k miles wins....does that work?

In the mean time make a wager and the loser's money goes to some charity...have fun with it...life is just far too short. In the mean time I'll just enjoy some p-corn and watch the show:

Help yourself to some, there is enough for everyone.

ahhh Newbie! So much to learn! If we don't get to argue over something that is totally pointless and inconsequential on a Daily basis, most of us will go postal and kill our fellow co-workers! I am on the Ranger-Forums therapy program, so let me argue in piece, or someone will Die!

10W-30 Mobile 1 or any comparable synthetic in everything but the '03 Crown Vic in which I use the OEM spec oil, Motorcraft 5w-20 Synthetic blend.

I've used to run Texaco Havoline with good results as well, but the synthetic oils keep the engine a bit cleaner and allows for longer change intervals. I change the non synthetic oils at 3,000 to 3,500 miles and the synthetic oil at 4,500 to 5,000 miles or so. I don't worry as much with the synthetic oils if I go a bit farther either.

Considering John is the OCD type when it comes to this and not some punk in auto shop class, I think I trust him. He took the time to have oil anylized under a microscope to determine what works best.

Synthetic Oil 2005 Ranger Edge 3.0 Automatic

Hi, I just purchased subject truck with 7200 miles. Can I start using a fully synthetic oil now or must I wait a certain number of miles (e.g until the engine is completely broken in)? Thank you.

I've used Valvoline 10W30 since I purchased my truck (8000 miles when purchased) in 1994. It has 130,000 miles on it and doesn't use a drop. I'll stick with it.

Truck: 1994 Ranger XLT
Completely stock- No mods, yet.
130,000 original miles

5w-20 is too thin for the 4.0, stick with 5w-30
