lifted97ranger's auto to manual swap.....
#151
It is basically capable of running the engine but you'll have a ton of codes stored for the missing auto inputs. I think it's likely that you'll have a custom calibration anyway, so the offending auto stuff could be calibrated out by the tuner.

ok, well thats a long ways down the road, so we will cross that bridge when we get there. thank you for all of your input on this!

I have a few questions related to this. I really want to swap in a manual, but I'm not real sure about the wiring. I have read that I have to get a new pcm and that I don't have to. If I do swap out the pcm will I have to get new tunes written for my xcal to work? Can I just get tunes written for my factory auto pcm to ignore all of the auto inputs?
Thanks,
Chris
Thanks,
Chris

i have a manual pcm but i dont have it programed to my key, yet.
i also did not hook up my clutch censor so i crossed 2 wires from the old harness so now my truck will start no matter what.
trying to get you t-case to work is a huge mess i talked to my ford guru and he told me there a mess just pull the motor off, i asked if there was a wire i could cross like i did for the tranny but no luck... (my t-case will shift into 4hi on the fly. not 4lo)
that is why im upgrading to a manual transfercase
i dont know about your xcal, but im pretty sure you cant overwrite your pcm. gota get a new one... but call your dealership they can tell you. my buddy said i can go to him or the dealership, he has a ford computer thingy...
hope that helps, btw it is alot easier than you think, i did damn near everything my self...

dealership can reflash the pcm to a factory manual equipped truck...
Snider....for you..you'll NEED to get a 01+ 4.0L trans. 01+ has the VSS on the tailhousing of the trans...and thats your speed sensor.
on my buddy's '98 4.0 4x4...he's running his factory auto pcm, a clutch safety switch, and still is able to function his four wheel drive perfectly normal like my facory equipped manual truck. when we plug in the '98 4.0 4x4 manual pcm, he gets nothing. no crank no nothing. His stock auto trans blew up on a tues after driving my truck on a sunday....he had all his parts on a thurs....we started work on fri night, and drove it sat night. lol.

I am not worried about the physical work, that's nothing. I just want it to be wired up right. I am worried about what Jordan said about the Tcase not shifting into 4 low. Is this something you think I'll have a problem with? The lights on the dash thing doesn't really bother me and not having the cpp sensor wouldn't bother me either unless it was need to make something work. It is bypassed on my other ranger anyway.

Thats because you can't see the other 50% of his posts and PM's that were moved or deleted. Just because someone is knowlegable and great resource to a forum, doesn't mean they don't have other problems.
