Yeah, but why? I know how to do that already, and I'd be just like every other lowered guy out there. I'd rather do something interesting and learn new things. For all I know, maybe taking the suspension from an F100 and mounting it in a weird way will be much, much easier, cheaper and stronger than lowering I beams, and it'll become the next big thing in lowering? I doubt it, but still. Plus, it'll be much more amusing, when someone asks me what it is, to say well, some of it is my old '94 B3000, that's from a '55 F100, that's from a '77 Mustang, that's from a '51 chevy... ect, than it would be to say "Oh it's a Ranger." That's the point of a rat rod, taking all the old parts that would otherwise get thrown in the smelter and make something new and cool.

It just looks like your trying to build the cheapest thing possible with bunch of cheap parts which are mostly considered junk thrown together.

Welcome to rat rodding, couldn't have put it better myself. :biggthump
I understand it's not for everyone, I'm not going to be upset if some people don't like it.

Honestly, think about it, which takes more skill? Buying bolt on kits that come with step by step instructions and warentees to work and putting it on, or every step of the way doing something new with no instructions whatsoever, and making it work, and at that, for 1/3 of the cost of doing it the "right" way? Most of this project is for the learning experiance, and the desire to just do stuff.

Ok, here is the suspension very loosely mocked up. Ignore everything except the ride height, it's give or take 1/2" correct.

EDIT: After looking at the pic it's kind of hard to tell, it's about 3" from ground to frame with about 6" of room for the axle to flex before it hits the frame.

One bracket down frameside, then my drill bit broke. Damn. The spring hanger will be welded on, with two bolts. The bracket itself is made of 1/2" steel and the bolts are 3/8" grade 8.

Attachment 167121

There's a good shot to estimate the ride height. With wheels and tires I'm hoping it'll be just as tall as the bottle.

The whole shebang as it sits now. Hopefully soon we'll be done with the boring front suspension stuff.

I'm goinn to keep it topless. Texas is weird, you are required to have windshield wipers but it says nothing anywhere about windshields... Go figure.
Interior will be stock, but painted with new carpet.

Wolgun 03-25-2009 06:02 AM

so your gonna try and get it legal?

Very well put!! Some people are just too ignorant to try or wish to do something similar.......and end up posting all the trash replies.

No progress since the last pics... I've just been staring at it waiting for it to work on itself. I haven't been feeling well lately and while it was around a perfect 70F for weeks, it's dropped out of nowhere back down to almost 45F... God I hate Texas.

Yeah seriously... I'm so sick of working on suspension... lol. All the rest of it after the suspension will be easy as pie, until I get to wiring the whole thing... *shudder*

Yes... YES... The steering is also done!

I have a small laundry list of things to do tomorrow, but other than that, it's ALL done. FINALLY. I'm on freaking cloud nine, seriously.
Tomorrow:
-Find and add outer shackle to passanger side rear
-Drill holes for the bolts, right now it's all on the welds (new $20 bit broke >:( )
-Check and tighten all bolts
-Beering

No real progress but just wanted to post this up. This is where the 302 is going to sit, the cab is going to sit right behind the bellhousing like normal, so It's going to move up about 2 1/2 to 3 feet. I'm really happy with it there because it clears everything, the tranny crossmember will be moved, obviously, but the oil filter, plugs, exhaust manifold, coolant tubes, ect, are all exposed and easy as heck to get to. Enjoy!

Later today if I get the time, I'm going to get everything marked up and measured and get the cab set in place.
