I have a question. Did you set the caster correctly? If so whats it set at? That front end bothers me bad,I have a feeling it will not be safe to drive setup the way it is. Do a search for "setting caster"

b3kbruiser 04-12-2009 11:27 AM

I haven't measured it exactly but the caster is about +5º. I want it a little positive, but if it's too much it's easily remedied.

You want negative caster. The angle the leaf springs are mounted looks like you would have more than 10* of caster at least.

I thought negative caster made the wheels hop, and positive caster made steering unaided more difficult but gave better grip? Either way it's easy to adjust.

Well at least you dindn't drop a pontiac 400 or a 350 down into it like most do, I hate it when a see a mixed brand hotrod. Nice job lookin foward to see the finished product.

Bad news guys.

The project is done.

A few days ago I came home from a weekend trip and found that my roommate had taken the jackstand that was under the right side of the frame (the front suspension didn't ever get tires, so I had a jackstand under each frame rail to keep the hubs off the ground) and left the frame suspended by only one jackstand on the left frame rail. For 36 hours. Needless to say, having not put on any crossmemebers yet, so the framerails basically hanging free, the frame warped almost 5". Even with the other jackstand removed and left to sit on the front hubs as if they had tires, one side sat about 2" off the ground. Great.

I don't have the tools to bend it back and I'm not about to pay a shop to do it, so this is the end for the project. After trying to hours to find ways to bend the frame back I cut up the frame and scrapped it, re-sold the front suspension and am trying to find a buyer for the 302.

I'm PISSED. I know roommates do dumb things, but... Really? Use some common sense.

this sucks. i was following this project with so much interest and now someone had to mess it up. go punch him for me.

ranger_mclaren 07-28-2009 11:21 PM

Man, Dude that sucks

winks 07-29-2009 07:23 AM

Sorry to hear that. Your roomate sucks ass.

034x4 07-29-2009 07:32 AM

Sounds to me all you needed to do was move the jackstand to the other frame-rail and let it sit for another 36 hours. A frame-rail alone is not hard to manipulate.

Trust me, I tried that, it didn't work. Even tried setting weight on the loose rail to encourage it to bend and i couldn't get it right, ended up making it worse.

I forgot about this build until this morning. The news sucks. I would've loved to see a rodded mazda.

If you weren't so far away, and my brother wasn't so set on a flathead. I think this would go good in the model A that he's starting.
