Project Ford Turbo :) 84 SVO

Well as some of you know... I got this car in partial trade for my old 98 ranger that has seen better days. Its a 1984 Mustang SVO.. Standing for Special Vehicle Opertations. Its basically a foxbody Mustang with a Turbocoupe motor.. 2.3 liter ford 4banger with a Airresearch T3 Turbo pushing out 14pounds of boost though a top mount intercooler.4-wheel disc brakes, 5 lug wheels, Factory Koni Ajustable struts and tubular control arms .5inch wider than a stock 84 mustang. Hurst shifter, Recaro designed seats and the famous biwing. Making it a car made to challenge the German car market in handling and overall a well balanced car more than stop light drag racing the v8's of america. Its the only other car other than the corvette that came with factory 16 inch wheels in 84
The car was a little rough and turned out to be kinda a basket case.. Paints nice outside of the body theres no rust. Turns out it needs floors. Someone put a floor pan in it and just set it over the original rotten pan (very dumb) .Soo Im gonna take the one they put in out, and cut out the original rotted pan and either put the replacement back in correctly with welding or just get a new one.
These cars are famous for terrible wiring and mine looked terrible when I saw it but after tearing the ENgine harness out it turns out it needs like 3-4 pigtails sodered on so its ok.
Heres the car when I first got it home back in December

In mid January I took my tax money and sent the spare motor I got with the car to my local machine shop and had the totally rebuild it. The motor was the original motor that belonged the car. The motor in the car was a 86 motor. Well they racked up a 785$ bill on totally rebuilding and assembling the head, machining the block, putting the rings and rods on the new pistons I got for it. And machining the crank
heres some pics of the car in the teardown mode

if modded right that svo will eat up 5.0's all day plus with the rising cost of gas if you drive those normally youll get some good gas mileage. Plus the SVO is EXTREMELY rare putting in a v8 would be a slap in the face to the car.

if they are that rare, then replacing the original block with a different block will also decrease the value and originallity of the car........collectors check for these things as the VIN is stamped in the block....

as long as he kept that original motor and keeps it with the car that would still pull atleast here in chicago about 7g's

The motor I had rebuilt is the motor Dearborn put in that car.. someone threw a 86 motor in it.. I checked.. its a matching numbers motor.. head.. even turbo.. Having the orginal turbo rebuilt to stay with the car... And when u get a chance... look at this video.. Supercharged 4.6 swapped 89lx vs a 86 SVO 2.3 with 29 pounds of boost and STOCK LOWER END... Guess who wins :)

heres a couple videos.. all cars are basically mustang stock with exhuast and boost up a biut... but stock turbo cars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_--Mf8IYF3g

this one the SVO has a dodge Holeset cummins turbo on it

thanks man.. Im on SVOCA.. but I tryed turbo ford but there not accepting new members... now I gotta wait a month to do the motor.. cuz I ordered the wrong pistons.. everyone swears just to get the forged pistons..I got hyper's thinkin I will be ok... Im just gonna do the forged and make it stronger

Couldn't have said it better

I'd rather an SHO over an SVO, simply because I've got such a big infatuation with the SHO's. Infact, I'd love to own one that isn't beat to hell. Those are hard to find. Take a 5 series all day at the track, and I've seen it done.

Beautiful car man!! Very clean.....even tho I wanna slap you for not using fender covers!

A word of advice...I have been into the 2.3t stuff a while and you must use forged pistons and I would not reuse the stock rods on a new piston either. Heating the small end to press the pins takes its toll on the stock rods. If you are going to go with good forged pistons spend another 250-300 on some good aftermarket rods too.

I used to have one of the rarest of the rare SVO's but had to sell it due to a divorce....bigest mistake of my life. I found a local guy parting out a 84 SVO and went to check it out and turned out it was so nice I bought the whole car. I later found out the car was a special order from a dealer in Dearborn ordered in blue. They never officaily made a blue SVO til 86 and only a hand full. Mine was prolly one of the two rarest SVO's ever made. The other was a white 84 which my friend owns. Check on SVOCA about it,its a cool story. My old car is part of Kendal Cokers SVO collection in AL now.One of at least 40 SVO's he owns.

And for what its worth.....a 2.3t motor from another 2.3t car is not going to hurt the value of these cars at all!!! We are talking about foxbody mustangs here not Hemi Cudas or 427 Cobras! The turbos, heads and many other parts are not vin stamped and as long as the car retains the factory equipment for its year it will be just as collectable as any other.
