1997 5R55E

I was hoping to get some advice on my 97 4.0 ranger. I bought the truck about 8 months ago and about a month ago the overdrive light started flashing and the truck went into limp mode (I stopped driving it after that happened). So I have been looking for a new tranny, am I able to put a newer year 5R55E tranny into my 97? Thank you!

Welcome to the forum

4R and 5R are the same transmissions as far as swaps, just FYI
trans is engine specific, 3.0l trans won't fit on 4.0l engine, even if same model number
Years can be different
And of course 2WD and 4x4 are different, no, they can't be converted

Assuming 2WD not 4x4

Yes, you can use a 1995 to 1997 2wd trans from a 4.0l engine, as is
1998 to 2000 model will require you to swap tail shaft housings, just 6 bolts, very easy to do, a 1997 needs the speedometer hole on the tail shaft housing, the gear on tail shaft itself is there on all years, its machined on to shaft

2001-2011 from 2wd 4.0l can also be used, need to swap tail shaft housing, it will have 2 extra sensors but you don't need to hook them up

The 4R55E and 5R55E are the same transmission, the "5-speed" was done in the Computer not the transmission, lol
