Icon5 Avatar pic question

I am wanting to put a pic into my avatar, but I always get an "invalid format" error message. What image types are acceptable? Bitmap, jpeg, or what? I have tried converting my image into different formats but I always get the same message. My pic is within the guidelines (110x110 and less than 50kb). I have tried linking off of photobucket and pulling images off my computer. Any thoughts? What am I doing wrong?

I'm a dumba**. I guess bitmaps don't work. GIFs do! Anyone know how to convert bitmaps into jpg? Tried changing the extension, but it doesn't work. GRR!
