HELLO i have a 1999 ford ranger xlt 4.0 v6 my overdrive light blinks on and of when the computer figures out theres somthing wrong with the transmission and it will shift from 1st 2nd and when it trys to go into 3rd and rev bombs. it also wont shift into 1st after a while until i let off the gas i talked to some people and they told me to change the tranny filter and gasket and of course it did nothing i was looking if maybe it could be the one of the solenoids or something i want to see i i could just fix it before having to just change the transmission.

Welcome to the forum

If the OD light blinks that means the Computer(PCM) has stored some trouble codes in memory, transmission codes, P0700-P0799

See if you can get them read, make sure the reader can read transmission codes, not all can

That may tell you if the electrics, the solenoids, are then problem

Look at the transmission codes here: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li...II_codes.shtml

In the 700's, they can be very detailed

You can always swap out the Valve Body with solenoids, can be do in the truck, if that doesn't work then rebuild the transmission, you already have the new valve body for that
