Replacement Starter
Replacement Starter
We are coming to the conclusion that my 1994 XLT will not start because we need to replace the ignition cylinder and, likely, the starter.
I would ask if you guys could kindly suggest a brand. I have looked in various places that offer multiple brands. Rock Auto and CarID have about similar prices.
Is the Motorcraft remanufactured SA 785 RM my safest bet? If buying a totally new part, what do you folks recommend? I don't see a new Motorcraft part.
Many thanks folks.

If you buy Motorcraft its always best because they are ford parts. I just replaced my starter a couple of months ago, anr they told me that the remanufactured is alot of times better. if they come out with an updated part it will be on there plus its cheaper than buying new!!!
Not to be impudent or ugly, but who are "they?" The staff at your local garage, parts store, dealership? Just curious, mind you, I am trying to get as much information as I can before I drop dollars and cents that are in short supply. I have seen them for under $100 at Rock Auto and CarID, they are nearly $170.00 from my local Ford dealership. A few years ago, my mechanic said parts for the Ranger weren't available on the regular Ford site he uses for parts. He told me he had to go to "Ford Classic" but I have not yet run across that although I am looking.

I got this kit for mine and rebuilt it myself, this works well assuming the armature and commutator isn't toast.
Oil contamination got into mine and wore the brushes right down, and one morning it barely turned the engine over and then nothing, I all could hear was the solenoid kicking out the drive gear.
The oil contamination saved the commutator.
Chances are the same kit will fit yours, I don't think Ford changed the starters that much, they may have different mounts, but I think the guts are probably the same, but Ron would know for sure.
The listing say from 1990 to 2008.
