What synthetic winch line are you running?
What synthetic winch line are you running?
Just curious what synthetic winch line you guys are using.
Amsteel Blue seems popular due to price, but some question its heat resistance...though some debate that there is not enough heat genereated when the winch is used properly - meaning not winching out for long stretches but only winching in.
There is a new line called X-line i think made by ORO (OffRoadOnly) but is more expensive. X-Line looks like it is only avail for 3/8" line, not 5/16".
I dont have much info on Masterpull.
And another one I have seen on the web is Viking. They have a fire/trail combo line that has the line on the drum made of Technora (better heat resistance - I think the Xline may be made of this) and the rest of the line is Dyneema which is basically the Amsteel. I think I have found this line 5/16" and 100' for about 200-250 as opposed to 140-180 for the Amsteel Blue and 300+ for X Line. The Viking combo line also comes with a sliding outer line for abrassion protection and "crushproof" thimble and "premium" hook.

My buddy uses 3/8 viking on his hitch mounted warn winch......so far I have been very impressed with it. We've pulled his big heavy k5 blazer from alot of scary places with it. Just make sure to keep lots of towels and crap around to put on rocks and trees as a protector for the rope.
Amsteel Blue, but it never left the cab this weekend....
It does have a 15' or so protector sheild on it, and I am not worried about melting it to the drum
I think those problems were likely manifested by the competetive rock crawlers and capitialized on by the people selling other brands
- nice idea on the rags and towels Draimen !!!

Neil, where did you get yours?
I saw some on ebay but dont know if they come with the 15' protector. I think it may be added by the retailer, especially some 4x4 retailers online...but not certain. I have seen some shops say theirs included the protection. Like rockstomper listed above.
