What is this random hose above my spare?

Dropped my spare today and noticed this random hose above it. I assume it's part of the evap system but it looks like it broke off of something. Is this suppose to be open like this? If it matters the truck is an 09 2.3L.

EVAP system vent
Should have a filter of some kind on the end so bugs can't crawl in

Thanks. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't suppose to be connected to something else. I'll try and find a little filter for it.

That rectangular box IS the filter or "dust separator" in Fordspeak. From the factory, that elbow has nothing else attached - just open as in your photo.

Not sure I would be happy with that.

Loads of bugs like small hoses to build stuff in

Google: Dorman 924-284

Its for axle hose vents, to keep the creepy crawlers out, lol, not sure of what your hose size is?
but these come in different sizes

This vehicle has federally mandated ORVR (On-board Refueling Vapor Recovery). During refueling, a large percentage of the displaced gases from the fuel tank are channeled through the canister, filter and elbow. The majority of the hydrocarbons in the mix are held in the canister while other gases are allow to escape. The large volume of vented gases and the speed of fuel entering the tank are the reasons why it needs such a large, low restriction outlet.

This is a carefully balanced system designed for refueling functionality and legal compliance. Adding a restrictive filter like Dorman 924-284 would surely lead to slow and difficult refueling (multiple click-offs). I would be hesitant to add any auxiliary filter.

For most Rangers, this system should work fine as-is over the life of the truck. Extensive use on unpaved roads or deep water crossings could potentially cause trouble with the canister and/or filter. Ideally, I'd like to see the vent placed higher than it is and in an even more protected location. Unfortunately, both are somewhat impractical in the rear of a pickup.
