clicking ticking sound front left wheel

I just bought a water pump was going to do it Friday. Now I am starting to notice ( about 70 KM/h +) this a few nights ago while driving to work at first I thought that it was a rock in my tire tread which makes the exact same sound but I checked the tire a few times and nothing a few very tiny one but nothing that would make that much noise.

Last night while driving home late window down no traffic I slowly turned my wheel right then left while traveling 90Km/h and it gets louder while turning right. is that CV joint I looked under my truck did a visual check boots are in place looks very clean almost new . I know that CV joint sound on a front wheel drive makes a clicking sound which gets louder turning but that usually happens are any speed just as long as the wheel is turning this one is only noticeable at 70+ Km/h I am not sure what to look for .

What year??

CV joint......so assume 4x4??

If 4x4 are they manual hubs, automatic hubs, or Live Axle(always locked)

not sure about autohubs probably , its a 04 ranger 4x4 I didnt know that rangers had live axle I would assume that would be the same as my old 77 dodge ram which didn't have manual locking hubs

2001 and up Rangers had Live axles, front hubs are just bolted to the axles same as rear wheels, so front driveshaft is turning when vehicle is moving, just not powered by the engine unless 4WD is selected

Put truck in 4high and see if ticking changes, that would indicate front drive shaft issues

You have a CV type joint on the front drive shaft at the transfer case end(also called a propeller joint) and these were known to make a ticking noise when they needed replacing, and front drive shaft is on drivers side so thats where noise would seem to be loudest.
So check for play on that end of the front driveshaft

The front differential is an OPEN type, so turning direction of front wheels changes the drag on the drive shaft so could change the noise.

It still could be front axle CV joint causing the noise, but the front driveshaft was more common

I am starting to realize that it is my front hub because I remember for a while now at night while driving about 80 Km/h I could hear a kind of howl I took it for the step on the side of my truck because I had removed the cover ( water was getting trapped inside the pipe+so I thought that it was the sound of wind blowing though it. was going to do the water pump today but of course the angle I have to lean to do the pump spasms out my back so I cannot do it my self I called around for quotes to do both the pump and front hub cheapest I can find it around 1100 and they will not use my part they will use a rebuild 110 water pump. I really wished I knew of a place fairly close to Aldergrove that could do it for cheaper. this pisses me off becasue if my dam back wouldn't spasm I could do this for around $200 and maybe 3.5 hrs labour

Look for Mobile Mechanics
They come to you and WILL use parts that you supply, YOU warranty the parts not them, which is only fair, lol.

They charge an hourly rate that you know ahead of time, but more if you help :)
i.e. $75/hour, or $85/hour if you watch, $105/hour if you help, lol.

Mobile mechanics don't have the overhead a shop does, so if you have the place they can work, then check it out
Look on local Craigslist

Mechanics HATE using parts customers bring to them. It's not a money thing, it's a warranty and liability thing. Say you bring in a bunch of parts and something doesn't fit. That mechanic is now stuck with your car blocking his shop while he tracks you down to come pickup the bad part and find a new one. Or say a week later that part explodes. Now the mechanic has a pissed off customer in a fight with him over who's responsible for the repair. There is no upside for a mechanic to accept customer parts. Would your doctor let you bring in your own replacement kidney?

oh I totally understand that but it does have to do with money I mean the one place wants to charge me 110 CAD for a " rebuilt" water pump and almost 160 CAD for new when I got mine for 68 CAD ACdelco) which is Cost) and it is the proper one that is one hell of a mark up for water pumps. I was going to do the water pump myself actually the whole thing myself but my back cant handle it just basically screws me . I probably could get a chair pull the rad and front grill so that I am not bent over but then there is a change for more things to break like rusted screws bolts lol a;so need to get a thin enough wrench to get on the fan clutch to loosen it

Took it into a shop they did a road test couldn't hear anything I went with them but of course being in the pass seat I couldn't hear the clicking sound they put it up on the hoist noticed that the drivers side ball joint is pretty bad passenger side it starting to go they didn't charge me anything which I thought ways a great change ( back when I used to do mech work I rarely charged for that) I am going to get them done tomorrow and also the water pump. if there is anything else wrong with the front end I am pretty sure they will see it when they start pulling things apart and am hoping that will stop that clicking sound I personally doubt it but it is something that needs to be done anyway.
