1984 Ranger Headlight Reminder chime location?
I got my 1984 Ranger (2.8L, 4X4, Automatic, P/S, P/B, no A/C, if any of that matters) used many years ago and the headlight reminder chime has never worked, nor has the keys in the ignition and door ajar reminder. I suspect a previous owner removed the chime itself but I'm having difficulty finding the location where said chime should be. Reverse side of the fuse panel like the emergency flasher? Does anyone know? I've tried to find a pic of the back side of the fuse panel or even a location of the chime but I'm chasing my tail... Thanks in advance if anyone knows!
I'm not familiar with the older Ranger, but knowing Ford it's probably in the same spot as the F-Series trucks. Pull the glovebox out, and somewhere in that area, either behind, or above should be a little colored square plastic speaker. That is the chime box. On my 1980 F150 there were two different boxes, one for headlight and one for seat belt. In later years they combined them into one box and that's how I suspect yours should be.
Indeed, that is where it *was*. I pulled the glovebox, looked inside and found short cut-off wires above the glovebox where it used to be. They didn't even so much as tape the wires to prevent a short! Off to the junkyard to see if I can not only find a chime but the plug as well it seems... Wonder what years/models would fit? F-150 or Ranger or Bronco II in the 83-92 year range? Does anyone happen to have a schematic by chance?
Here's the thing. The early 80's F-Series trucks had a REALLY annoying buzz box, instead of a chime. Sometime around 1983 they upgraded to the one piece chime boxes, so look for 1983-1987 Rangers, Bronco/Bronco II, and F-Series. The F-Series and Ranger Based Vehicles saw some changes in 1987-1988 so there may be differences in the newer models. Other vehicles may work too, sometimes Ford uses the same wiring colors and connectors amongst different models for the same style part.
Finally gave up on my local junk yard and ordered one off ebay (E9EB-10D840-AA). Works great! Now have a headlight reminder, door ajar (with keys in ignition) and fasten seat belt reminder (chime, not buzzer). Just wanted to post that info # for someone in my situation looking for a chime and not buzzer...
I added a switch to disable it temporarily for occasions when it's a hot summer day and I have the door open working on swapping radios out or something... The wire I 'switched' was the black with white or blue dashes ("key in ignition buzzer trigger"). Confirmed that it did *only* disable the 'door ajar with keys in ignition' chime and the headlight reminder chime still chimes when needed; That way if I forget to switch it back on, the headlight reminder and key-in chime will still work!
Only bad thing about this chime is that they do deteriorate and must be repaired eventually (foam ring internally must be replaced with a new fabricated one):
