Scratched pistons

I took out my 4.0l v6 sohc 03 Ford ranger engine because one day it turned off and when I went to turn it on the fan and belt only spun but Inside the engine it sounded like it was just making a spinning sound??? So I called my mechanic and he said there was no compression and I must of jumped timing. So I checked my timing chains and the guids we're all broken. So again out goes the engine!!. But when I pulled out the engine I noticed that a few of my rocker arms were loose some more than others. One of them you could actually pull right out that's how loose it was.so a mechanic friend of mine came by and told me that it must be that my valves made contact with the pistons and must of bent the valves is the reason why the rockers are so loose?? So I removed the heads and long behold all 6 pistons had 2 fingernail looking markes on them. Would the pistons still be good and does that mean my valves did bend?

Yes, that would have bent your valves. I wouldn't be afraid to reuse the pistons myself, depending on how deep the damage is on them. One would also have to inspect them really closely for hairline cracks around the valve impact marks. If the damage is too deep that would suggest a much harder impact, which could tweak a rod, or crack a piston around the pin, etc..

It would probably end up being cheaper and smarter to just buy a reman engine or get one from a salvage yard and yolo that b*tch.

Thanks I appreciate it!! I guess it's official I need to stop wanting to fix the same engine witch by the way has 250.000mi and go and invest about a grand in another one well at least thats what they cost around here with 6 month warranty.

Look for something 2006 or newer if you can find it. They should have the updated timing components in them.

The 4.0l SOHC is an interference engine, the Rangers 4.0l OHV engine was NOT an interference engine
So there is often confusion on this point with mechanics or pretty much anyone who looks something like that up, lol

An interference engine means the valves and piston SHARE space inside the cylinder, so if valves are not "in time" with the piston they can hit
4.0l SOHC doesn't have much of an overlap in space but it ain't 0 either, so pistons will survive a strike but valves will get bent
