Ranger FX 2007 O/D Off blinking, trani feels like slipping
I looked around but cannot find any infos about this. My truck always works fine but it was leaking transmission oil so I changed a line to the radiator. Since then the transmission seems to slip but only when the over drive off light comes on, blinking. Other times the transmission is fine. Have you seen that problem before. How to fix this? Thanks
Welcome to the forum
You have a 2007 Ranger, what engine, 2.3l, 3.0l or 4.0l?
You will have a 5R44E(2.3l, 3.0l) or 5R55E(4.0l) automatic transmission
Flashing OD light means a fault in the shifting that can cause transmission damage, so back off the throttle when that happens
There will be transmission codes to read, P0700-P0803, so you need to find out what codes are in memory
Slipping cause clutches and bands to get increased wear, which is damaging to transmission, so OD light Flashes
Fixing a leak didn't have anything to do with this, unless you just blocked the line
You don't have enough information yet to diagnose what might be wrong
I assume you check ATF fluid level?

Thanks for the reply
I will add a few more details I forgot to include. It is a 4L 6cylinder motor with a automatic transmission. The oil level seems OK but yes since the new line that was leaking athe radiator I get this error once in a while. Could it be that the mecanic put the wrong type of oil? I hear that they are many different types for automatic transmissions. I will bring it back to the garage but don't know what to tell them and they seemed stumped when we spoke on the phone.
Went back to see the mechanic and he does not want to look at the line. Simply saying that if the blinking O/D Off light comes on the transmission needs to be changed. I hate dishonest mechanics. It only slips when the motor is cold or just starting after that the tansmission does not slip at all. Do I really need a replacement transmission?
The wrong kind of ATF oil can cause issues but would be a long shot that someone would do that, or add enough to matter.
You might need a new transmission but flashing OD light can't tell anyone that.
There are many transmission shops that just want to put in a new transmission and thats all, reason is they don't want the hassle of repairs coming back all the time.
I don't blame them, it is quite common to fix one problem in an older automatic and then have another problem show up a week or a month later, its not bad workmanship
Its an old transmission, so if you fix a low pressure problem then the now higher, but normal, pressure blows out an old seal, and its a broken transmission AGAIN, lol
And customer doesn't understand that the repair was good, and this is another issue, he just wants it fixed, and for free since its only been a week.
Automatic transmission parts are very interdependent, much more so than an engine is
You can ask a shop to do a pressure test and that can tell them alot on what might be wrong, but its not 100%
You can ask a shop to install a new Valve Body with solenoids and bonded separator plate, that can be done without removing the transmission
That will fix "most" slipping, if the clutches and bands are still OK
But its not a 100% guarantied fix
Without disassembling the transmission you won't know the actual problem, and at that point you rebuild it in any case so.................
You can google your symptoms, and you will see what the transmission guys are up against as far as diagnosing a problem just on the symptoms
You will find as least 20 matches all with different "fixes" that worked
Be like going to the Doctor and they can only see you thru glass window, see your symptoms but can't take temp or blood pressure or anything, diagnose you by looking only
And you can tell alot, but doctor wouldn't be right 100% of the time, lol
You can add a can of Lucas Trans Fix, it is a friction modifier and swells gaskets and seal to get back some pressure from leaking gaskets and seals
Can not hurt transmission, and if slipping is less or gone then transmission will last longer

Thanks a bunch for your great advice. When the motor gets warm, 5 to 10 minutes, the transmission does not slip anymore. This is crappy work and they will hear about it once it is fixed. Thanks again I will keep you posted
Thanks to all
So I went back to the mechanic and he checked his job. Now it is working perfectly fine. I was really angry because at first he just said that my transmission needed to be replaced ... Love my truck :)
