2008 2.3 crank no start, cam and crank questions

Got a 2008 ranger 2.3, timing belt is intact. Replaced coil pack. Fuel pump and pressure is fine. No rpm is registered on gauge when cranking. Do these have a cam and or crank sensor that if faulty will not signal the ignition and will not register any rpm on the dashboard?

Welcome to the forum

2001-2011 2.3l Duratec engines have a timing chain, the older 2.3l Lima engines used a belt, just FYI

The crank sensor by the crank pulley is what starts the spark and fuel
The computer should turn the CEL(check engine light) with key ON
The CEL should go OFF when starter motor is turning engine over, that means computer is "seeing" a timing pulse from the Crank sensor,(CKP) sensor

Cam sensor is used to fine tune spark and injectors after engine is running, Crank sensor is the main sensor

You can spray fuel into the engine, 50/50 test, and then try to start
If it starts then Spark is working, but there is no fuel delivery<<< so crank sensor is OK
If engine doesn't start then there is a problem with Spark OR Compression<<< CEL not going OFF would mean check Crank sensor first then test compression

The 50/50 test should be the first test you do on any engine that cranks but doesn't start, its simple and easy, and narrows down possible problem instantly
Test has been used since the 1890's, lol, and still a great test

Thanks Ron. CEL is on when in on position, AND stays on while cranking. Does not go off.

Replace crank sensor and give its wires a good look

Ron, thank you. The culprit was mice ate through the harness. I took the sensor off and the harness came with it lol. Splice the wires and all good now
