Swap 3.0 for 4.0 can it be done?
Swap 3.0 for 4.0 can it be done?
Hey guys, I just bought a 2001 Ranger Edge and the check engine light is ON. It runs very rough and from past experience its probably the plugs, coil pack or wires or some combination of these. I just haven't had a chance to have it checked out yet. But what concerns me more is the valve train is very noisy and there may also be a rod knock. I have decided to do whatever I have to to get the truck running well and pass inspection and possibly be a daily driver.
It has the 3.0 V6, which I have never owned a Ranger with that engine before, I was lucky to find my 2 previous Rangers with 4.0 V6s (a '90 and a '98). I have heard that the 3.0 can have issues with the timing chain or something. I loved my 2 previous 4.0s and was hoping this one would be as well. But alas....
Anyway, at this point I am looking at worst-case scenario and considering a swap for the 4.0 and ditch the 3.0. I had Google searched on my phone for info, which led me to this site/forum. But once I gat registered and signed in, I can't find the thread I was reading on my phone. So here I am staring a new one.
I am trying to find out if the 4.0 can be switched out even steven, or what other parts will been to swapped as well, like wiring harness, ECM, transmission, etc.
Can someone who is very knowledgeable about this type of swap can tell me what is involved. Or am I better just staying with the 3.0. I do like the prospect of more power.
Any and all responses are much appreciated!
Thanks guys!

Issues with the Vulcan 3 litre are leaky pan gasket, leaky timing cover (anti freeze) and leaky cam shaft cover at the back of the engine. (sometimes a leaky crank seal if a cheap one is installed or installed incorrectly)
Keep in mind that even these things only give trouble 10 to 20 years later and they must be installed correctly and then they're good for another 20 years.
So they're not really an issue.
The timing chain uses no tensioner and is very simple, so you heard wrong about that, they can be expected to go for 300K miles.
If you're going to do a swap, you'd be better off getting an Explorer and use the 5 litre, it's just as much work with the 4 litre.
Others will post about doing an engine swap, but all has to be changed over, wiring, computer, trans ect. and if you have PATS, I think even the steering column too with the Explorer keys.
I think the heater box has to be either modified or taken away so it will fit.

No on the 4.0l swap, would be the same work as doing a V8 swap, but without the benefit of having a V8 Ranger when done, lol
If the current 3.0l Vulcan doesn't run well and you think it might be low end issues, i.e. rod knock, then look for a used 3.0l Vulcan
You can use a 1986 to 2008 3.0l Vulcan long block, but would be better off with 1999-2008 long block
Or fix current engine, sell that Ranger and buy a 4.0l Ranger<<< this is the best 3.0l to 4.0l swap, period, also cheapest, lol
When you swap engine size, you need these
The engine
The computer for that engine size and PATS anti-theft parts
The wiring harness for that engine
The Vacuum harness
The matching transmission for engine AND computer
Motor mounts, trans mounts, driveshaft
Exhaust system
Radiator
So 4.0l V6 or 5.0l V8 needs the same work
So if you want this Ranger then do the V8 swap, not the 4.0l swap
