Cruise Control INOP

When I first bought my truck (1996 XLT) over a year ago, the cruise control was functional. I mainly drove it around town, so I never used it. Recently, I've been driving to out-of-town car shows, and realized my CC has quit on me. What are the easiest first steps to diagnose it? Visually, everything looks as it should.

my first inclination is either the jumper harness at the brake switch on the master cylinder or the switch itself

When you say "switch itself" are you referring to the one on the steering wheel?

no, the switch on the master cylinder, its a pressure switch that kills the cruise when you apply the brakes
