fuel leak top of tank

fuel leak top of tank

always smelled fuel but never saw any visable leak; then once i filled up other day & drove home i saw gas run down the whole side of tank(all wet) so obviously i'm leakin from my filler hose possibly, or somewhere up top of tank. anyhow, i'm gonna be dropping the tank to get in there and fix it. anybody have any info on how bad/easy this job is or advice?

maybe, if its just the filer hose leaking, you could just replace or repair that. probably wont be that hard, and if it is the hose, definatly dont need to remove the entire gas tank, just unscrew the filler from the bedside

i thought that too but cant see where it attaches to tank; goes over frame and is tucked in there somewhere; checked prices on those things; over $100!!!! Thats crazy, mines a step-side bed too, does that make any difference?

probably wont matter if its a step side. i would try and repair it maybe. take your bed off to get easy access to the top of the fuel tank

I just replaced my filler neck hose (HINT: goto ebay, they can be had for less than 70 bucks).

Here's all you need to do.
Step 1: remove 3 bolts inside the gas door.
step 2: remove 3 Torx bolts on drivers side of bed floor
step 3: loosen 3 torx bolts on Pass side of bed floor
Step 4: Jack up or have a friend hold up the drivers side of the bed so you can get in there.
step 5: with a flathead screwdriver loosen the hose clamp holding the hose to the fuel tank. and pull the hose off...
Step 6: reverse order 5 through 1...just remember to line the neck up with the hole in the bed before bolting the bed down.

Its easy.

if it is your lines at all.. i had same issue.. turned out the top flat part of the pump assmbly cracked....funnn

That's what I did for a few months while I *****ed and moaned about having to spend money on my "beater". 1/2 tank fillups don't last very long. Now if I can just get the mileage up to where it should be....

I just did this fix too. It's frayed where the hose meets the fuel tank. I just added another hose clamp and used a piece of garden hose cut open and wrapped around to act as a seal. no problems.

getting the bed off is easy. just make sure you open up the little door where the gas gap is and unscrew the screws around it before you try and lift the bed off.

EDIT: I definetely suggest taking the bed off to do this. That way, you can thoroughly inspect the filler neck and see if your lines are leaking anywhere. Also might be good to clean the electric connection to the fuel pump. as the posters before said: T55 torx bit and a buddy to help you lift it off.

Poor plan IMO. but not my truck.

Not necessary. with a scissor jack inbetween the frame of the truck , and the bed, you can jack it up more than adequately to inspect, and replace the filler neck. (the scissor jack isn't necessary to lift it, so really any object can be placed inbetween there, the scissor jack is what was handy in my situation.) But I stand by my assertion that bed removal is unnecessary

I'm a highschool student. My truck has well over 200k miles on it. The gas filler neck isn't something I'm gonna dump almost a hundred bucks into. If it starts to leak again, i'll just find a better way to seal it. I stand by my statement that removing the bed is good to do anyway, so you can check for any other problem spots (ie suspension components) you wouldn't normally be able to see very easily. Bed removal doesn't take more than a couple minutes anyway.

Now I have to nitpick - (blame the guy on my thread saying "its a truck, get over it".)

Given that I'm an Ex-suspension mechanic, I can say with certainty that there are No suspension components under a truck's rear that require the bed to be removed to inspect. But even more valid is the fact that you(not you specifically, the common auto owner) have so little knowledge about suspensions that if there was something wrong, you wouldn't know what you were looking at...

I see your point that it doesn't take much time. but it is still completely unnecessary. I could see taking it off for curiosity, and that's fine...but to say its a needed thing is false.

To the hose alterations. I'm not certain on the chemical effects of gas on a water hose, but I can say that gas is a strong solvent, and may degrade the rubber over time, whether this will be catastrophic in nature I cannot say, but I can say you are begging for problems with your "shadetree fix". but like I said "not my truck".

I am not sure the hose for step-side bed is the same as the short bed. However, you can call the dealer and just ask if it is the same or not. Good luck.
