Icon10 "Epic" "Snowstorm of the century"

Here are the photos I took during the December 8th-9th snowstorm here in Ames, Iowa.
Most of the state was shut down today and the winds are now blowing near 50 MPH.

Many parts of the Interstate and Highway systems are closed because of drifting.
The Iowa DOT pulled the plows off of some roads because of dangerous conditions.
This was the biggest one day snowfall in December in Iowa since 1888.

Anyways, here are my pics.

I had nowhere I needed to go, and didn't see a reason to put myself in danger. Everywhere in town is pretty much shut down.

That's quite the dump of snow.

We started to get a bit of that last night, but now we're in full swing of the storm right now. If we get the full amount of snow Environment Canada is predicting, it'll only be around 12 inches at the most. Nothing to write home about, but enough to bring out all the retarded drivers!!

Yeah, we got around a foot, or a little more... but that is a ton for Iowa in one dump. The winds are causing the biggest of the problems now.

ah I wish that was the record amount around where i am right now... I went to college at SUNY Oswego... I was there when we got the like 9 feet in 36 hours. It was declared a state of emergency, and the national guard was sent in to start removing the snow in dump trucks! I came out from college to do my parents driveway... and the snow was over the roof of my ranger at the end of the driveway... over my head even when I stood on the tube steps!

Nothing like climbing a mountain of snow to snowblow a driveway.... I like the snow though, its nice to know I can drive in it and other cant :) I get places with less anger!

The national guard has been out all day today rescuing stranded motorists on the interstates, because they don't heed warnings that they shouldn't be traveling in the first place.

The city only has 10 plows, so they called in the area farmers with their tractors to plow... and I am sure they pull people out.
There is lots of ice under this because it snowed Sunday night too, and they never touched that. I would just spin my tires if I tried to pull people out.

wow, this is a lifestyle I have never experienced. I grew up on the coast where there was no snow, and have lived upstated for 3 years where it snows generally a few inches one day a year in January, and everything shuts down.

I would love to experience snow like that some day as a part of daily life, but it sounds like it a huge pain.

It is a pain, but its really nice to get a snow day.

Iowa State University usually only closes because the city bus that thousands of students (including myself) ride can't run. But they cant even keep the roads on campus clear, and the drifts block doorways on campus.

Yeah, if you drive thru rural areas, be safe and call in. The winds are drifting everything really bad.

Make sure you check the road conditions too:

Haha, I started taking pics early to show how it changed.

I forgot to mention this is the first snow of the season, aside from the inch we got on Sunday, which I consider part of this storm because it didn't get cleaned up.

Official totals are around 15".

I drove my little ranger right on out of the plowed in crap in 4x4 LOW. Worked perfectly.
I think my neighbors were surprised that it just drove right out.

And my neighbors helped with the very end of the driveway because it was about 2 - 2 1/2 feet of heavy plowed snow.
