2.5 tdci knock

Hello I've just bought a 2007 tdci 2.5 ranger and it has a constant knock, I don't think it's bottom end, I'm hoping it's a tappet as the nock is there all the time, idle, under load, and on deceleration, are they hydraulic tappets or adjustable? Any help would be appreciated

We, in North America, don't get to buy those here, which is sad.
4-door Ranger with turbo diesel would be a nice ride.

They do have hydraulic tappets, according to parts list.

Never work on that engine but on other engines if you disconnect 1 fuel injector at a time and then listen for the knock, if it almost goes away then it is a connecting rod knocking on the disconnected cylinder, the "knock" sound is from that cylinder firing, rod slapping crank, so when it is not firing the noise is gone.

Valve train "knock" is usually described as a "tap"

Exhaust manifold leak is sometimes described as a knock

Thank you I'll give that a go later and let you know, it's hard to try and decide what it is, either a loud tap or a quiet knock if that makes sense

Right here's what I did, tried disconnecting all injectors one at a time, made no difference, also had the rocker cover off and adjusted them to the correct gap also made no difference, I'm at a loss now what this loud tap/knock could be, any ideas anyone?

Got to the bottom of the problem, turns out it's a small end ticking/knocking, think this truck has had a hard life from the previous owner as took a gamble and bought it with no records on service history, hopefully this will be the only major problem, replacing all four small ends, big ends, and piston rings

What are "small ends" and "big ends"?
That is a slang term I haven't ever heard here in the Colonies

Thank you, my ignorance is abated , but unfortunately never cured

We call the small end a bushing, big end a bearing

I'll try remember that for the future, I've got the top end off just need to get the oil pan off and out but think I need to remove the anti roll bar and cross member tho unless I take the engine out
