Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor Replacement
Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor Replacement
Morning Folks,
So I pulled a P1443 on my 97 Ranger 4cyl, so I replaced the gas tank and disconnected/reconnected the battery. About 50 miles later Check Engine light reappeared...
From what I've seen online P1443 usually means something bad (hoses, solenoid, etc...) with F57Z-9C987-AB Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor
Assembly - 2.3L.
Does anyone have info on how to replace this? It doesn't look too bad, but I am not seeing any bolts or screws and don't want to just start pulling sh*t apart...
Thanks and Have a Good Day. Spring is finally here in the Finger Lakes, NY! (Yay I get to start mowing the lawn again)

This could be something as simple as a bad gas cap.
Earlier Rangers are also known to develop a crack in the fuel inlet hose between the cap and tank .
I had a '94 2.5 that the solenoid got stuck open. Just took it out and rapped the bottom on a piece of wood and never had a problem again.
Start at the canister , probably mounted down low between the radiator and battery .Follow the hoses from it and look them over.
Spring is out on the Tug too.
Preparing to do battle with the blackflies.

I believe that the Purge Flow Sensor can be purchased from Ford with some hoses and perhaps the solenoid as part of a ~$200 assembly. I found the PFS for a 97 Escort by itself at RockAuto for just $20. It was from a name brand supplier and even had the Ford logo right on the part. Maybe that would be a good place to search if you need just the PFS. Installation was easy.

P0443/P1443 are fairly common on 95~97 Rangers. These codes are usually caused by split evap hoses or a bad Purge Flow Sensor, rarely by a bad Purge Solenoid. The hoses and PFS are located near the carbon canister which is behind the DS headlight area.

Thanks a lot!

I believe it's STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # CP416. Everybody online seems to list CP416 as a "canister purge valve" or "canister purge solenoid" but I think it's the Purge Flow Sensor.
Compare the Purge Flow Sensor in this Ford diagram on the left to SMP #CP416 in the Rockauto catalog on the right. Then check the actual part on your truck for comparison. PFS has 3 wires, purge solenoid has 2.

briz, I had this exact same code on my 95. I went the route of ordering up the F57Z-9C987-AB Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor Assembly you listed from a local Ford dealership after looking through all the hoses and not seeing any cracks. The whole kit ended up running me just under $100cdn and took about 5 minutes to put in. I haven't seen the cel come on since after a year now.
Sorry, I just bought this old truck and I'm kind of car DIY novice. If you can tell me where is it is in relation to the battery (in front, to the left, below, etc.) and the approximate size of the canister, that would help me a lot. Do I need to pull the battery to get to it? Thanks in advance! I have the Haynes manual but its kind of tease since there aren't enough diagrams to know where stuff is.
Great information and diagram!
Have a 1996 Ranger, 2.3L. I've cleared the P1443 code two times and it keeps coming back. Hoses are degrading, but no noticeable holes.
So I ordered the F57Z-9C987-AB Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor Assembly from a Ford Dealership. Total w/shipping to WI was $138. It came in the mail today.
I unhooked the battery to clear the code, and installed the assembly, two hose and two electrical connections (see my next post below).
NOTE: Be very careful when unhooking the electrical connectors. Use a small screwdriver to gently move the tabs out of position, so you can unhook the connector. The tabs break-off very easily!
I'll check back in a week or two to let you know how it went.
Thanks for the information!!!

New assembly installed for 5 days - so far, so good. Here's a couple photos of the F57Z-9C987-AB Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor Assembly and installation for future reference. It matches the diagram that RWENZING posted above.
Again, thanks "RWENZING" for the detailed info and diagram!!! I took a chance replacing the whole assembly, but seeing how degraded the hoses were, I just wanted to eliminate a possible problem with those and/or the purge valve. This Ranger only has 87K, miles and I want to keep it for a long time.

I got the same P1443 code on my '96 Ranger and installed the Purge Solenoid, drove it for a while (10 miles) but the CEL is still on. Will it only go off if I reset the code or should it go off automatically, indicating the the new part corrected the problem. Incidentally, I don't know if this other problem is related to the 1443 code but I am NOT able to get ANY heat out of my heater. Thanks in advance for any advice. Glad I joined the forums.
Just pull the battery cable and hit the brakes to drain the capacitors. Then reconnect everything.
However, often times just throwing parts at the system will not solve the problem, which I discuss WHY in a video I made.
The test car is a 1997 Ford Escort, however the 1995 1996 and early 1997 Ford Ranger should have the same system. Even the computer pins I mention should be the same. The wire colors however, will be different.
Here is the video on troubleshooting the P1443 P1444 P1445 P0443 engine codes which are all related the evaporative emissions purge flow system:
I also made a video on how the system works in depth:
I know this thread is a little old, however I hope this will help anyone else that has the same problem who comes across it.
