Bare with me here, I can tell you 100 different ways to swap a Cummins engine around in pickups for the most part but I haven't spent near enough time on the Ranger forums to go through with anything just yet..
I have a 2001 Ranger with a 2.5L that thrashed last night. Only reason for trying to keep this thing is because I've done a lot of work to it outside of the motor and trans...so here is the deal...I can get my hands on two different 1994 2.3L trucks both with 5 speed manuals. I feel like there is something about the 2001's and up that makes this not easy or doable due to wiring? yes, no, maybe so? I can also get an explorer with a 4.0 v6 for cheap, too. I'm not a huge wiring guru but can figure it out. If its not worth messing with in this truck and I'm wasting my time any info is appreciated.
I've read up here and there on the differences between the engines, I looked into building a turbo motor a couple years ago when I got the pickup, I looked into the 302 swap, I've considered the v6 swap, I just have not read deep enough to just dive right into any of them and I don't have a lot of free time to do so either..
Ideally I would like to build a 4 banger turbo motor with a 5 speed manual in my 2001 Ranger. Or just get the thing running again (rebuild the 2.5 or get a long block..) don't really wanna go through all that effort and not gain any power...
IF ANYONE HAS ANY LINKS TO ARTICLES REGARDING TURBO MOTOR BUILD, MANUAL SWAPPING AN 01', OR ANYTHING I SAID ABOVE, i will gladly go read that if you don't wanna type it out...cuz I'm that guy that would tell someone to just go look it up..I just don't have the time to sit and forum search because I need to make something happen YESTERDAY. I'm gonna keep trying to search in the mean time but if anyone could point me in a better direction I'd appreciate it.
1994 and earlier 2.3l Lima engines use a Hall Effect Crank sensor
1995 and up use a VR(variable reluctance) crank sensor
These two sensors are incompatible, there is no wiring or device that can convert one to the other
The front of the engine block was changed from 1994 to 1995 for this new sensor
The change was done for the new Computer Rangers got in 1995, so 1995 and up computers can't understand Hall Effect Sensor
A few people may be in the same boat as you, they have a 1989-1994 2.3l that needs to be swapped but can only find 1995-1997 2.3l
So maybe you could sell or trade the 1994 2.3l for a 1995-1997 model
