I also have a 1996 2.3 and i pulled mine off yesterday with a 3 jaw puller just hooked jaws on forward lip and came right off i was worried bout bending lip but it didnt. Now my problem is when i was changing timing belt and tensioner the spring and spring pivot bolt was missing someone left it out and just put bolt thru timing cover.

go get a harmonic balancer puller. I just tapped mine with a hammer and it came off. You DID take the center crank bolt out right?
