Hi everyone. This is my first post on the ranger forum!
I spent last summer rebuilding my 1990 2.3 motor (first time rebuilding a motor). The truck sat for 5-7 years without being run because it got a bad oil leak and the clutch wouldn't engage.
A list of everything I have replaced up to now:
clutch
pressure plate
flywheel
oil pan seal
rear main seal
all of the gaskets (including the head gasket)
new timing belt
serpentine belt
water pump
thermostat
spark plugs
exhaust manifold
O2 sensor
battery
alternator
heater hose assembly
Once everything was back together, the truck was still leaking a quart of oil a week. Ended up replacing the oil pan gasket again and it's still leaking. My only thought is that when I put the rear main seal in, I didn't grease it up/coat it with much other than a dab of oil. Not sure if the oil would leak through a dry seal or not, just a point a friend made.
Either that or maybe there could be a hairline crack on the block?
The truck is also leaking power steering fluid. It's a slower leak, but definitely noticeable. I haven't been able to pinpoint the leak, but I was planning on taking the hose assembly off and getting it rebuilt. Since everything on this truck is now over 30 years old, a lot of things just need replacing (I figured this out the hard way $$)
Aside from the leaks, the truck ran great for a good 6 months or so before it broke down in February this year. Keep in mind it was probably around -10 F. I was driving home and my check engine light came on. A few minutes later my truck started sputtering as I pressed on the gas and it eventually just died while it was still rolling. Tried starting it back up and it could only start for a second or two. Troubleshot on the side of the road and when I turned the key to initiate the fuel pump, I could hear that the pump was sputtering. Wasn't the normal whirring sound of the pump. This leads me to believe it must be a fuel problem. I could have gotten bad gas, or there could be water in the tank from sitting for several years? I believe the tank has never been cleaned so I was planning on pulling the bed off to get to the tank. I'm going to replace the fuel pump and fuel filter just because I'm sure it's time for new ones (they've never been replaced). Hopefully, this will resolve the issue. Just seems like the truck stops getting fuel after idling for a few minutes.
Basically, all of the parts/systems I didn't work on last summer (besides the stinking oil) are now shitting out and need work.
Asking for input since I've been trying to figure everything out on my own. Used this forum several times last year when I was rebuilding the motor and I appreciate you all! Glad to become a part of the community.
