ABS Brakes

Hey everyone, I didn't see a section here dedicated for Brakes so if this is the wrong place please advise.

My 2003 Ranger XL 2WD automatic has been showing the ABS light on the dash at off and on, i.e.. intermittently. I can drive for miles and it never comes on, make a stop for a few minutes come back out start driving and in comes on. Recently during some rain the ABS light was on and I had to apply brakes suddenly on the freeway in order to avoid an Escalade that is braking hard and what do I get. A reminder that I don't have ABS and all 4 locked up but luckily I had enough distance to stop or slow down while sliding along. Was that a wake up call! I did some searching and it appears that for my year model the ABS does not have a relay, just fuses. If it was a fuse it would be on all the time and it is not. if it was a failing (although have not checked) wheel speed sensor or the one mounted on the diff it would be on all the time, or would it?

Any information or direction on where to start would be greatly appreciated. Maybe someone else has experienced this intermittent ABS light.

Thank You.
