HAVE YOU DONE A SAS?????

So.... like the title says have you done a SAS. If so how did you do it, what did you use to do it and why. If you could do it again what would you change. Is there really a huge differance between a high and low pinon axel. What are the benifits of a Dana 44 over a Dana 60. In short school me on SAS.

So far i plan on running a Dana 44 low pinion ( just because my buddy is selling one), I am looking at running a 3 link with with coils and shocks( not coil over. I dont want to be screwed if one breaks on the trail) other then that i am not sure what i need or should do.

So if you have any in put on what i should do different or should do ingeneral please put in your 2 cents.

did you know there are many many SAS threads that document the entire process? do a little search, find a truck you like (and want to copy or whatever) and start collecting parts!

yes i know but I am asking what people would do if they could do it agin. I.E things they would change.

I have redone mine 3 times. Plus I have done a 2 other trucks. idk I like my current setup minus the D44

I wouldnt run a low pinion but you can run what you want.

Are the low pinions really that bad. Why are they so weak. Is it because of the angel on the drive shaft. Also what truck came withe a 44 high pinion front.

76-79 F150s and Broncos and F250s.

76 F150 is nice if you are going to 3 link it, there are others that will have cast in RA mounts (77-79 F150s and Broncos)

F250s are setup for leaf springs.

i haven't done one but in my research it seems like the easiest to set up would be a set up like on evens truck the red on beard did. they used extended radius arms and coils. then you don't have to try and figure out all the lengthens of tubing and geometry of the front end. its "bolt" in a scene. idk it just seems the and easiest set up to do.

So in laments terms, you are SOL on seeing the pics...

I would give you my advice, but I have a truck that was originally TTB, and I used a High Pinion Dana 30, not a 44, so im not sure how much help I could be.

But, as far as High vs. Low pinion, it really won't make too much difference in a front axle application. Both will be fine in a Ranger as far as strength goes. BUT, mathematically, the high pinion is stronger in a front application because when traveling forward, the load is applied to the load side of the ring gear and the pinion pushes the ring gear around, which puts the load on the larger inner pinion bearing. A low pinion axle, when used in a front application, puts the load on the coast side of the ring gear, and pulls the ring gear around, which puts the load on the smaller outer pinion bearing.

That being said, my Jeep has a Low pinion Dana 44 from a 77 chevy 3/4 ton, and I have had no ring and pinion issues even though I am running 38" swampers. You will be fine.

The low pinion 44 is not a bad axle, The high pinion is slightly stronger, but the ring and pinion is not the weakest link on a d44. you'd probably break axles or hubs long before a ring and pinion.

I'm using a low pinion waggy 44, I used leafs, but next time around, I'd link and coil it.
the good thing about the high pinion is that its easy to install using radius arms and coils, cause thats how most all come stock.
IMO a d44 is fine for 35's or less, but I want to get alloy axles befor I get too fearless offroad.
