just had a new steering rack installed today,now it has a jerking feeling like its out of fluid,before we put it in the garage the pump just had a whinning sound no jerking at all, has anyone hade this problem before?

 

well my pump is the factory one and I have a loud wine. a lot of rangers have a wining pump. Some say that you can replace it and it goes away and I think I'll try that.

You have air in the power steering fluid. The shop manual procedure is to remove the air using a hand vacuum pump with a special fitting.

Similar problem as described above, except no problem with the pump.
I put a NEW Motorcraft rack in my Son's 99 Ranger tonight...........
I was told to disconnect the coil pack & turn the motor over while turnin the wheel side to side as someone made sure the resevoir stayed full, but it bucks like a freakin bronco!!

Idlin its fine, but as soon as you try to turn the wheel one way or the other, it jerks so bad it'll break your wrist, and you CAN'T TURN IT!?????

Any ideas would be GREATLY APPRECIATED and/or info on this vacuum pump thing mentioned!!!

Curious: If I removed the line from the cooler, put a hose from a container of PS fluid to the cooler, and used a siphon hose to draw the fluid through, would it eliminate the air within the system???

 

You can try jacking the front up so the wheels are off the ground. Start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel to full stop one way then the other. Check the reservoir. If the fluid looks frothy. Stop and let it idling for few minuets, then repeat. Do this a couple more times and then turn it off. Let it sit for about an hour or so and repeat once more. If this doesn't work you'll have see if you can track down the vacuum tool rwenzing is referencing.

 

Some times it may take up to like 50 times of turning wheel side to side to get all the air out. My wife had a old Lebaron she used for work and when i replaced hers it took me 1/2 hour to get all the air out.
