Mine went out a little while ago and along with the howling , there was also some popping or as well as some "binding" when turning (kind of like if you ever had 4x4 on dry pavement...) It's pretty easy to fix, at least worth looking at.

Not long, in fact if the wheel is locking up in any way you are damn lucky it hasn't seized up while you are driving.

really depends on how brave you are. in theory the unit bearings shouldn't come apart. if its a roller bearing then you better get it done quick because you can ruin your spindle. good way to check if your bearing is bad is jack the front end up and grab the tire a 12 and 6 (top and bottom) and wiggle it to see if there is play which there should be none if their is tighten them or replace them. thats it

His are the tapered roller bearings so yah they can fry those spindles. I would replace them asap.

after to much wear. they WILL come apart and disentigrate! happened to mee not to long ago.. also excessive heat from braking can affect them. the wheel seized going 35 mph and ruined the spindle... no bueno!
