I need camshaft help...
Hey guys and gals. first off let me say hi to all of you. I am looking for a camshaft. here's what I am wanting: a rough type idle with that old school muscle car/Harley Davidson type sound or to make it short and sweet a chopper type sound. A wild cam is what I'm looking for. I have a 3.0 stock V6. My truck is an 04 Ranger Edge. Can anybody please help me out of this mess? There so many camshaft options out there it isn't funny anymore just confusing as hell. plus I am considering roller lifters. the exhaust is pretty much all I have done to it (my truck looks too good to do anything else to it). Can anybody please help me out with this???

first, why?
there is no options out there for your motor, your only option is to send your cam somewhere and have it custom ground. your engine is already a "roller" motor so you already have roller lifters so yeah. next you will have to get a tuner so you can re-flash your PCM and then it still may not run right.
good luck

Do some research... You wont be able to run a "Big Cam" and keep it street able. I can see you having vacuum issues (meaning your brakes will suffer), you will have drive ability issues, you'll have to change your torque converter, and on top of all that its going to have to be custom tuned/dyno tuned...
Plus a "big cam" in a 3.0 v6?

7000 RPM's?? My 2000 3.0L was limited to 5600 RPMs. Even then, it started to lose power after 5000, running such high RPM's in a stock non-forged 3.0L is a grenade waiting to go off IMO. If I were you, i'd get a set of the roller rockers from underdog performance, an xcal tuner, maybe change up your exhaust, and be done with it. But hey if you end up doing it, post the results!

Thanks man. To answer your question my truck virtually has no rev limit. My tach goes to 7,000 rpms and I don't start to loose power until 6,200 rpms. As to why I would like to be able to run higher rpms and a bit more performance. what grind would you recomend? and whom?

Thanks....
Thanks casper for the links man I appreciate it. That is how high of rpms my truck can run, but I try to keep it at a maximum of 5,200. That was an exp when I first got it just to see how high they were tuned at the factory. most factory engines can't even go to 4,500 usually they tune them lower for fuel eco purposes (or at least I think don't know for sure) they're sneaky at times.

lol dang man, thats too much rpms. I have an 04 like yourself, and ive had my tuner set at 6K before, and it was a waste to run it that high. I havent had it that high in almost 2 years. I set it back down to stock, and I rarely hit that limiter. I find it to be slower once you get past a certian point. I usually like to shift around 5000k when im on it hard, usually not much more than that.

Thanks my friends...
Ok I am going to check out underdog performance and see about getting me a factory cam and have it reground to street specs. I wish to say thanks for all of your guys info and advice which was definately needed. After looking at comp, Lunati, edlebrock, isky, and crane cams and seeing all of the factors involved it can get your brain rattled to say the least. between carbed or fuel injected, towing etc. it seems every cam company has a completely different solution and they fight each other like cats and dogs when it comes to analysis, and there I am scratching my head and cussing holding an empty bag. Shame on them.

Everytime you rev that engine past 5,500 RPM's you remove a slight bit of tempre from the valve springs. You MAY be able to rev at 6,200 (factory rev limiter is 5,800 max), but you won;t be able to for long. You will not notice it, either, it will creep up on you and one day you will be struggling to pass a car on the freeway.
The factory valvesprings are weak and it takes some cash to get them up to par. The factory valves won't put up with it for long either.
Been there, done that, supercharged it (twice). Hope you have a fat wallet and unlimited checks...

so much for that plan. I aint about to pay damn near a $1,000 bucks to have that done. hell no. That was just for the parts too by the way. The over all total for this $1,800 bucks. with the new camshaft installed. Good thing I ran it by you guys first. Hell I can get a 5.0 crate from Oreily's for less than that easily.

"O" reily's auto parts quoted me $1,300 plus shipping, carb and all. They said it's a 1970's motor. The carb is O.E.M. and it's a pretty much stock 5.0. The gave me a quote of around 225 HP stock and about 305 Ft. LBS of torque. Just go into your nearest "O" reily's auto parts store and ask for a quote on a 302 Long block. The Axles I know can handle the power output. It's pretty much the same axles and housing they used on the mustangs (The cheap ones if you're asking). The trans I can get out of a salvage yard from an explorer. It will take some time to do the swap, but instead of a standard 4 barrel carb I eintend to use a 300 cfm carb instead.

I know. that was just the top end package. They said at comp cams that I'd have to have extreme tolerances on the internals period. They said pretty much I'd have to rebuild the entire engine from the ground up and could run up to $30,000+ . which is why I decided to go ahead and do just a standard 5.0 swap instead. In other words I aint about to pull out my engine just for an expensive rebuild of what I have. That's the company that finally gave me a strait up ,no B.S. answer. Everyone else just kept beating around the bush just to make some money. A bone stock 5.0 (225 Hp, 305 Ft. Lbs torque) with a racing weight tilt One piece front end, and a racing weight bed would be about all I need. The engine aint hard to find at all. You can get that at just about anywhere, and they're easy to get parts for.
