Welcome to the forum
3.0l Vulcan engines are very reliable, so odd to have a "bad one"
Whether or not to spend the extra $1,000 would be based on Rangers current condition, its road worthiness
New/rebuilt 3.0l Vulcan engines are usually good for 400k miles
Do you see it lasting for 400k more?
Used engine with 150k will last 250k more
Also warranty, what are the warranties?
And is it worth the extra $1,000 to you?
The difference of $1,000 over 3 years of driving is $28/month for a rebuilt engine
So it really is a judgment call as you know the overall condition of the Ranger and what your needs are
