Truck is a little rough on intital start and rich smelling.

Hi Guys,

Truck is running pretty good with new engine but I'm having a little issue. On the initial start it sounds like its choking a bit then some smoke comes out the exhaust a bit and smells really rich. Once it's on and starts idling it runs fine, but that initial start always chokes a bit.

I was thinking maybe spark plugs or o2's?

Any ideas?

Well they used the same spark plugs, I can change those at home myself instead of driving an hour to have them do it. If the spark plugs don't fix it then I'll take it over to them, just wanted to pick some peoples brains on here.

After all, that's what this site is for.

New engine but same wiring, MAF, O2 sensors and various other things. The motor is probably just fine but something electrical was hurt.

Did you change your MAF? And why didn't you get them to change your plugs while its out? I take it you got a new computer, what else did you get new electrically?

All the same electrical parts. All I got was the engine block and that's it. Everything else was transferred over. Didn't think my plugs were that bad so I didn't have them change them. But I can do that. Same computer and everything.

isn't it a new bottom end or a 'refreshed' engine?? what you bought was a short block. generally theres break-in smells and break-in smoke on new engines.

Good to know. It's a reconditioned engine. Here's the link:

http://karking.com/product_info.php?...roducts_id=159

I still went ahead last night and replaced the IAC under warranty and spark plugs to motorcraft platinum. Truck runs perfect as ever except for a lil smoke at inital start ups... I'm just going to keep cruising it and hopefully it will fix itself.

Thanks Shane.

'reconditioned' can mean ALOT of different things. IF it's a re-ring and hone job, there should be just a little bit of smoke for a little while. shoot...my chevy with the new engine still smokes pretty good. but...i could have messed up building it too. lol.

i'd wait for other opinions...but for now, keep rockin' it.

Sup Shane,

I noticed it again this morning when I started it... the smoke that comes out the exhaust is kinda blueish now that I've looked at it closer. Still runs fine though after it gets warmed up so I will definately keep rockin it.

Anyone else shine some light?

blue smoke = burning oil.

pay close attention to your oil level. imo...if it still does it after 500 miles or 1000 miles, i'd talk to the place you got your engine...
