Unless the person that told you this was talking about putting 44's on the 8.8 they were wrong. The 8.8 is plenty strong enough for our 4.0L engines. You can even run an 8.8 with a 5.0 to a point.

To put a 302 in it with 35" tires that 8.8 will not hold up ..This might sound corny but my mom used to own a 69 ford f100 with a big block 468 and 38"Ground hawgs and a 9" rear end and even the 9" will snap I mean I get what all you are sayin yes 8.8 is fine for what I have right not and if you dont do a lot of muddin but in my opinion 8.8 are garbage

dude.....yea it will......
even if you have a doubt, put in a 31 spline 8.8 out of an Explorer.....that will hold more than any stock 302 and 35's will put on it......
and as far as your mom's truck, a STOCK 9" is not that strong.......they are barely stronger than a 31 spline 8.8 axle....
just an FYI, but the 8.8 in 31 spline version is put in ALL new F-150's, and was always installed in the solid rear axle Mustangs from the Fox body era to present solid rear axle versions....and they made more power with the Cobra than you will make with your Ranger....

the front is a Dana 35 reverse rotation axle.....
if you are doing nothing but gears, then the splines in the axle doesn't matter.....gears fit on a 28 spline 8.8 the same way as they do on a 31 spline 8.8......the only thing you need to concern yourself with the spline count is if you are installing a locker or limited slip in the rear (i haven't seen a locker or limited slip for the Dana 35 reverse rotation)....

well, a locker is comin for the rear too (only rear, not front), but I think ive got that sorted out). but gears for front and rear - are they both 8.8's?
If I have 8.8"s in front and rear, then what truck has the 7.5's?
by the way, thanks for dealin with my questions & helpin out, i appreciate it.

some Rangers come with a 7.5 rear axle.......it was only put in a couple hundred Rangers with 4.0's, then Ford realized that it wasn't strong enough....however the 7.5 is strong enough to be put in a 3.0 and the 4 cylinder engine trucks.....it is still used today in the newer Rangers without a 4.0...
