If it was for the temp sensor, I would think it would be in a place where the sensor would sit in the oil?

Just take the cover to the local hardware or auto store and ask for a plug that fits.

Tap the port to 1/8 NPT and use a 1/8 pipe plug with sealant.

Also- the level plug in the Ex cover is in the wrong place for our application. The IRS Ex doesn't run the diff level as high as our axles do because its fluid doesn't lube the wheel bearings. Be sure to use the hole in the Ranger diff housing to set the fluid level or your wheel bearings will fail.

That hole in the Explorer cover is for the breather tube, as the Explorer doesn't have one on the axle tube....................so you can either plug it like I did with a self-tappin bolt or find ya a piece of tubin & press it in & run a second breather..............

so are you saying i need to make a higher fill hole? i was thinking if i can get a plug for the breather hole i can fill to the fill-plug and then tightn it and the pour a little more in from that top hole.
