4R44E Box no Drive or Reverse
I am collecting my first American pick up at the weekend :)
Unfortunately it does have an issue with the auto box. It will drive forward fine locked into 1 and 2 but in drive and reverse it really struggles to move.
In my head its looking like a full rebuild but just thought id ask the experienced guys out there what exactly could be the issue?
Also where's the best place to get a rebuild kit and workshop manual for the 4R44E box? I'm guessing there is nowhere in the UK, I have no problem ordering parts from America.
Any help would be great.
Thanks
Dan

Hi all,
There is an update on the situation with the gearbox.
I took it for a test drive this weekend and this is how the gearbox reacts.
The truck does drive in D however it does not change gear and when I take my foot off the gas and try and put it back on it does nothing and will slow down to a stop.
I then put it in 2 and it drove fine and when i would put it back in D it would drive again but do exactly the same.
Can anyone who knows these auto boxes let me know their thoughts.
Thanks
Dan

Evening….
where has this year gone…
Today I have spend a good day and removed the faulty gearbox and stripped it down…
I have come up stuck…. I have checked both sprags and they both seem fine… turn one way and lock the other…
Nothing seems visually damaged etc… what else could cause no drive?
any help would be great. Thanks

No, not really a good idea to do just a soft parts fix once trans is disassembled, thats why "rebuilt" automatics only last 12 to 18months
New pump, ford only
New sprags
New OD drum, if old one is out of round, which it often is
New TSS sensor
New valve body with bonded gasket, shift kit and new solenoids if you want
New clutches and bands(soft parts)
And new torque converter
Yes, you can reassemble just replacing gaskets and seals, and hope for the best, its just labor to pull it out again if it doesn't last or you are just going to sell it
