1-ton SAS and EXO build

going to be re-building the truck, im super scared of breaking stuff and want my truck to be bullet proof! meaning im going to 1-ton axles, 8 lug, 35+ splines front and rear.... i have a good amount of time to collect parts so im going to be waiting for good deals. this all started when i found a dana 80 with 5.13s for a good price on craigslist. however that fell through, so now im looking at a sterling 10.25 rear with 5.13s and a detroit locker... front will be a dana 60, kingpin or balljoint (whatever i can get a hold of for a good price).. i will be needing new wheels, 8 lug, havent decided on size yet, either 15, 16, or 17s.. tire size will be 37-39.5 inches...

as so the EXO cage, i have been reading a lot and have seen 100s of designs... ive been drawing up ideas and taking things i like and combining them.. the bed will be coming off, and a flatbed with cage will be fabricated..

i will be updating this as i find parts.. thanks

all of my old axles, tires, beadlocks, are for sale! PM me if your interested!

i don't mean to sound discouraging, and i may not be thinking of the right item... but 10.25" sterling rear end... isn't that a little bit over kill? some how i don't think i am thinking of the right item... the truck would be solid *** bullit proof though... i doubt any stock motor would be able to turn 37's though, even with 5. what ever it was... you planning on doing a motor swap?

good luck with your project, i am eager to see how it evolves

the size of axle has nothing to do with turning the tires... its all about the gears.. a old yota 4cyl 22R (96HP) can turn 42's with 5.29s and dual cases! yes. the sterling 10.25 is a big axle, and that is how i want it. UN-BREAKABLE!! no plans for motor swap anytime soon. possibly dual cases tho

i realize that the size of the axle doesn't change how hard it is to turn it... that was more a second point, unrelated... the 40's are just BIG f-ing tires, for a 4L...

when you say dual cases, i assume you mean putting a second t-case on, so you have a super 4 low?

why even ask about an axle being to big..big never a problem when it comes to axles..

Sterling 10.50 is what Im running, its a beef axle I see no problem there..

Its also all in gearing..like Carl said above a 4cyl yota with the right gearing can run 40s+ with no problem. With my swap I see no issues motor wise running 46s on 5.38s only thing I can see going wrong is the tranny giving out. but we shall see...not to hijack or anything :)

its going to be a great build..cant wait to see the finished product Carl

Any stock motor? Even the Ranger motor can turn 37s fine with proper gearing, theres 5-10 guys on here that have ran 37+ on their truck. Now if were talking about any stock motor than people run 37s on the F-250s all day long, even with stock gears.

I think its because its his daily driver. Needs it to be dependable. You can plan on building it up, you can't plan on when it will break.

Can't wait to see it.

It's a shame you're so far away. Those axles would look great under my expo.

I like the idea, but being a DD IMO is a bad idea.

I have seen Zach working late nights just so he could drive to work the next day.

my setup now is super strong and dependable, especially with only my 35s, however im building it tuff so i have no doubts, when i see an obstable to conquer i dont want to ever question the strength of my rig...

also, 15s will work with modification and tires seem to be more common and less expensive for the 15 inch wheel, however i am willing to run a 16 or 17 if i find a good deal on a tire/wheel combo..

i would ship the axles!! HighRoller shipped his to the RazorEdge guy, and it wont be until the summer so there is time to research and plan shipping methods... so if someone is interested in shipping we can work something out!

You should make the exo out of PVC and then wrap it with aluminum foil

I like this Toyota.

Virtual Jeep Club - View Single Post - Stone Soup Metal Works

I would go with 17" wheels. Anything over 35s 17s are the way to go from my research and what I've seen.

that toyota is ok, however there is no lateral support on that cage, not much stopping it from shifting side to side except for the rear mount and front bumper. he needed to tie it into the frame near the front fender

Why not a 14 bolt? You'll never break it completely stock and its got the extra pinion support bearing like the 9" does but the sterling doesn't. Both are boat anchors and weigh a ton, just my .02, 90% of the people I see with 1 tons have a 14b.

Plus you can make the Orb of Traction if you're running a 14 bolt, extra cool points

Peace of mind, because he can, one tons kick ***? all reasonable ideas. A d44 isn't THAT hard to break, especially considering they're the same ujoints as a D30..

Because 17 is the new 15. 16s will be a squeeze and 16.5s are all but gone now except for people running H1s. 17 will fit the 1 tons and more and more people are getting tires for 17s so it'll be easier to find some.

You *can* put 15s on one tons but you'll have like 1 or 2" of back spacing and need to grind the calipers.. all bad things IMO, plus it'll be wide as hell with that little BS.

that bed cage is one of the Trail Gear or All Pro ones I think.
