Ha No, I don't have those moments in the 01.. :(
Am I the only one that doesnt trust their gas gauge? When cruising on the highway, my first half tank(according the the gauge) only lasts 80 miles, yet I can put 150 miles on the second half of the tank.... Crazy right? I don't know how many miles I can put on a "TRUE" quarter of a tank.
I guess maybe my 2nd half of the tank keeps "going and going" compared to how quickly the truck rockets from full to half a tank (80 miles tops)

temperature is effecting the mileage in mine.. lower the temp the worse the mileage.
and altho the pump says 10% max ethanol .. it feels like more like 20%...=crap gas...
even so, i still think i could get close to 500 miles out of the 21.5gal tank basis
highway driving and easy on the speed...

I've seen mileage vary from tank to tank on mine for the past 7 or 8 years. I've gotten a little as 185 and as many as 413 per tank. (94 2.3L 5spd). I've narrowed it down to certain gas stations and certain brands.
One sure way to drop mileage on mine is to use a higher grade of gas, it sucks down premium way faster. I tried premium a few times and got the same result each time. It's not just my Ranger that sees the differences, my 2003 Grand Marquis, 2003 Crown Vic, and 2005 Town Car do the same.
The discount stations seem to give the worst mileage, with very few exceptions. We used to have a few Coastal brand stations around here, and they were the worst, now it's the WaWa gas stations that seem to have that issue. If I buy gas at one, locally owned truck stop, (usually a few pennies higher in price), I get nearly double the mileage than I do at the el cheapo stations. Most name brand gas stations seem to give me about 24 mpg, with the best being 28 mpg, and the worst being as low as 12 mpg.
It's hard to be really precise since I often am towing a small trailer, but I can usually tell how fast the gauge drops in the first few miles. It's the results from my cars that proved I wasn't imagining the difference.
It seems more noticeable in the winter as well.

a lot of it depend on the additives the refinery puts in the gas. Each batch can be different, how much ethanol, de-icer, and other things that are put in with the refined gas. i usually get 150 from a 3/4 of a tank which is about 17 mpg with a 5 speed and 3.73 gears, but i can get more or less from different gas stations, because of the quality of gas. I've heard that Shell, Marathon, and BP are about the best.
