odd, usually short trips and stop and go (city driving) are harder on engines, and oil...

As a rule of thumb, you're correct. My comparison just illustrates the point that some engines are harder on oil than others. Look at the manufacturer's recommendations, 5000 vs. 7500 mile OCI's.

I wouldn't mind doing it at 3k but I drive 5-600 a week, so 2000-2400 a month, so no thanks, I have better things to do than change it every 5-6 weeks. Aside from that, since I don't have a connection on cheap oil, it saves me money doing it this way, and my UOA says its still good when I dump it...

Another thing to consider is how efficient your air filter is. A poorly filtering intake system will definitely yield dirtier oil. Not to start a war, but for about 30,000 miles I ran a K&N drop-in filter, God only knows how much dirt (silica) my engine ingested over that period of time. After having to replace the world's dirtiest IAC, I went back to a Wix paper filter. I just finished an Auto Rx treatment, replaced my PCV valve, and returned to Mobil 1 5w-30. I'll be interested to see what the oil looks like 5000 miles from now!

As long as your UOA is good, your good.

I just can't keep my oil clean...it's just a mix of things...

3.0 is a major one
towing
city driving
hot/humid weather
a/c on all the time
dirty air/dirt roads

So basically, for the rest of us paying retail for oil your financial advise is null and void. You can't compare damn near free oil to retail. If I could get all that stuff that cheap i would change at 3k too. Its a waste of money if your paying full price off the shelf.

Would do the same if you had to spend 50 bucks for that oil change? You might say yes for a few months but you would stop after a.

Thats the retail value of the oil change jrpro130 uses. Thats just to high to do every month or so.

I spend 30 - 60 bucks a year on oil changes. Every 15k with mobil 1 EP and a motorcraft filter. Its about 30 dollars.

I wouldn't run a Motorcraft filter for 15,000 miles!

I did the math for $25/oil change. Lucas is not necessary...I'm probably not going to use it anymore.

I live out in the middle of BFE where it takes 30 minutes of driving to get to any civilization so I rack up the miles pretty quick. I usually change mine b/w 4 and 5000 miles with mobil synthetic. Comes out fairly dark every time. Now I would hate to see the oil that comes out of my patrol car.

If you run it for like 10000 miles can you run it with the same oil filter or do you change the oil filter like half way thru?
Mobil 1's a nice blend, but just like numerous people've said. It all depends on the driving and how good YOUR vehicle does. If you think you can drive 10k an oil change, it's your engine, not mine. My buddy ran Mobil I in his Impala and blew his head gaskets at 56k.

I dunno.... I'm gonna go with Goose and say, "If ya decide to wait that long, top all fluids off, and change the filter."

I think it depends on the filter. I'd run a Mobil 1 filter for 10,000 miles, but I'd change a Motorcraft at 5,000. If you really are interested in running your oil for 10,000, get a UOA done at 7,500 and again at 10,000. That way you'll know for sure.
