Want install an after market cruise control
Hello,
I have recently purchased a 2010 B4000 4x4 super cab. It rides very well and has some nice 'nice-i-ties' in it. But it does not have cruise control.
I would like to install an after market unit into it. Would any of you have recommendations and also is there somewhere I can get some 'visual' assistance like descriptions and pictures of an installation or a video.
Thanks

Basic wiring and mechanical skills are required, but not hard to do.
Cruise control works by monitoring vehicle speed, on newer vehicles there is a VSS(vehicle speed sensor), or you can add a VSS just for cruise control to the drive shaft.
Second part is the actuator, this runs off engine vacuum and has a cable that connects to the throttle.
Third part is the on/off/set and safety cutoffs, wires to steering column for on/off/set and wires to brake light, and clutch or Neutral switch depending on type of transmission, this cuts off cruise control if brakes are applied or clutch is pushed in, or automatic is shifted to Neutral/Park.
This is a PDF from Rostra, they make add on cruise controls, I haven't use one before, but it has diagrams and pictures of the install process:

I would check reviews of any product you may install

Thanks for the link
Thanks for the link to cruise control site.
I guess part of my dilemma will be which kit to purchase. My truck is the same as a Ford Ranger but some of the different 'sellers' seem confused as to which one to sell me? One says the 'generic' version and another says they have a specific one for my vehicle? I go to the cruise control company web site and I don't see anything specific to a Ford Ranger 2010 year model???
Hmmmmmmm

The specific ones are usually so you can "share" wiring, especially VSS.
The one I posted was listed as Ranger/B series compatible on a few sites, I would look at your wiring colors to see if they match up.
Ford tends to stick with the same wiring colors for the same purposes across models near the same years.
Universals are fine you just add the VSS they come with.
Remember a cruise control doesn't know 30mph from 70mph, when you set it, it knows how many pulses per second/minute there are from the VSS when you pushed the button, it just holds that count by opening or closing throttle.

I've installed these "universal" kits before, and they work very well, as long as you get the right wire for the VSS; on one vehicle that I helped a friend install on his Toyota 4Runner, we gave up on the VSS and finally installed the optional included weights on the drive shaft and the sensor to detect speed. Worked with that.
I'd offer that if you can find a kit that's specific for the Ranger and year, go with that for simplicity.
