Welcome to the forum

Yes, heater core can leak and the coolant will stay inside the heater cores plasitic box(air plenum), it will eventually start to leak down to carpet/floor if enough collects inside the box.

And yes, that is usually the only way you would smell coolant in the cab, leaking heated core.

I am sure you need the heat in the cab this time of year, but you could by-pass heater core, remove both hoses from firewall and connect them together.
Use another hose to blow out remaining coolant from core, just using mouth pressure
Then put finger/plug on one core fitting and blow into the hose again, see if core holds pressure, you could also have someone inside to listen for air escaping

Or you can smell it coming thru vents if its puddling on your engine by thermostat or even leaking by radiator.
