Check Engine Light Not Installed?

Check Engine Light Not Installed?
Hello Ranger-Forums!
First off, thanks for all the advice - was able to get my 1987 2.3 running a lot nicer this last month.
the details: today i did not pass smog because the inspector said my "check engine" light did not go on. I figured must be a burnt bulb, but I found there is no socket the gauge cluster corresponding to where the lense for "check engine" would go. Any ideas what's going on here? Did they really have a OBD in 1987?
Thanks for any help!

Yes there were versions of OBD systems in 87 however to my knowledge they were not required by law before 1996 when OBD2 was introduced so I don't know why they would do a CEL test on a truck that old. Another however, California's emission laws are insane so there may be laws specific to your state that don't apply to the rest of humanity.
