Hey everyone, I'm going to be doing the swap mentioned in the title in the upcoming months. It's essentially going to be a rebody of the 05 truck.
Anything I should look out for?
No, Im not going to sell the trucks and just buy one with whatever engine. This is purely a project in which I'm increasing my mechanical abilities. I'm going to have a grand at the most into this as I already own the 02, getting a new frame for 400, and an entire running 05 truck with a shot frame for 400 bucks.
I already have a v8 ranger in the works,so I'm not going to do that either.
So you are going to swap 2002 Ranger 2.3l drive train into 2005 3.0l Ranger?
You will need to bring the instrument cluster and most(ALL) dash wiring over with the 2.3l engine and computer, if I am understanding you right
Also GEM and cab fuse box, so basically all the cab wiring
The 2005, well 2004 and up Rangers, have an HEC(hybrid electronic cluster) so its matched to its computer, it prevents cluster swapping to "roll back" odometers
They also use an SJB instead of GEM and fuse box is part of the SJB
Good thing is, 2005 Rangers don't have PATS, but that's the only good thing, lol
You might be better off finding a 2004-2011 2.3l computer and cluster at a wrecking yard, it has to be a matched set, and with KEYS if its not a 2005 Ranger
Then you could just swap the 2.3l engine and trans from the 2002
2004-2011 2.3l computer would also allow you to drop the IMRC and heated thermostat, two bad ideas Ford had, lol, 2.3l Duratec lost these in 2004 and gained a few horse power as well

It'll actually be the 05 drive train into the 02 truck. I suppose I did the title wrong. But! That's good information about the Pat's, and imrc. I planned on gutting my truck and basically swapping everything from the interior and engine bay. I like the 2.3,but mines been giving me too many issues.
I got lucky with this 3.0. 400 bucks for a 110k mile engine and tranny. My local pick and wants 1200 for the 06 2.3 they have. And that's just the engine. Not the rest of the truck
Have you thought about just swapping your 02 frame into the 05 truck?
And if it's just the rear half of the 05 frame that's bad, just switch it, they do come apart right behind the cab
I'm getting a frame from a single cab. My doner 3.0 is going to be an ext cab. I just completed a full interior swap a few weeks back (different truck),so that's not an issue for me.
