1998 3.0L need to replace fuel pump.

I'm trying to find out if I can change just the pump and not the whole assembly. I understand that it would be best to replace the whole assembly, but unfortunately I am extremely broke and can't afford it all. I have easy resources to pull the bed and do the work. Is it even possible? If it gets me through the winter, I'll most likely replace the whole assembly with OEM.

I have experience in fuel pumps in Toyota, Chevy P.U. and Goldwing, just fuel pump motors can be replaced.
Do look close at the filter screen and bottom of the tank.

Does anyone have info on an alternate pump that can be retrofitted? From my experience, OEM's are WAY overpriced.
#1 RULE: Don't buy the cheapest.
#2 RULE: If you have time, search reviews of said pump.

Welcome to the forum

Yes, you can just replace the pump only on the Ranger assemblies
I would use Motorcraft pump but up to you

Best method for DIY to access the fuel pump is to slide back the bed or tilt it up

Dropping the tank is OK IF(big if) you have a lift and transmission jack to hold the tank, like in a Shop, otherwise you will rip out hoses and wires trying to disconnect and reconnect

IF it's warm enough, I'd go for removing the box.
Inspection to everything is so much easier AND you can treat any rust on the frame & box underside.
Youtube has a few Ranger box removals.
Main problem is the main bolts, pre-lube these before attempting.
(My habit) I generally grease threads when I'm in an area even tho I might not get to them for years.
