1998 cranks no start

I received a 1993 XLT 3.0 Ranger from a deceased family member and I'm trying to fix it up and sell it. Whenever I turn the key there is no fuel pump priming sound, so I think it has something to do with that. What should my first course of action be?

Welcome to the forum

You can get a 1998 Ranger Owner Manual here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
It helps for fuse and relay layouts

First, does the CEL(check engine light) come on with key on, amber light on dash
That means computer has powered up, it runs the fuel pump, no CEL means no computer
If CEL comes on then watch it while you try to START engine, it should go OFF when engine starts to turn, that means Crank sensor is working
If this is OK then............

Remove the big air tube from the front of the upper intake so you can spray fuel onto the engine manually
Called 50/50 test
Check that there is oil in the engine
Spray fuel into the engine and try to start it
If it starts, runs, and dies then spark is good but no fuel delivery
If it doesn't fire/start then no Spark
50/50 instant results

If it starts but dies then could be "out of gas", gasoline only lasts in a vehicle gas tank for 6 months, after that its no longer "fuel", needs to be drained
Fuel pump only runs for 2 seconds with key on, but it does that with each key on, so you can cycle key off and on as much as you want to confirm there is no "noise" from the gas tank
Check Fuel Pump Fuse and Fuel pump relay(ASSUMING CEL came on with key on)

If engine starts with 50/50 test, and fuel pump fuse and relay are OK then just one more thing to check, its a longshot
Inertia switch is in passenger side of cab under/behind glove box mounted on the firewall, its there to cut fuel pump power in an accident, i.e. sudden stop or roll over

Looks like this: https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qi...b1589f8c750-lq
Or this: https://static.cargurus.com/images/s...1600x1200.jpeg

Has the RED button on the top that will be POPPED UP if it has been tripped, you can just push it down even if it doesn't look popped up, but unless the Ranger has been in an accident its most likely OK

Then you are going to have to move the bed and replace fuel pump assembly, and clean the gas tank if it has been sitting longer than 6 months
