1999 Ford Ranger 3.0 no spark

Was headed to go fishing with my son and my truck did some sort of jerk, almost like the transmission was slipping and then catching. It did this a few times and then I crested a hill just up from the bait shop I was headed to. I put the truck in neutral and coast into the parking lot and just as I was coming to a stop the engine died. Also at this time the battery light came on the dash. The truck will not start and has no spark. My dad and I replace the crank position sensor as it had the symptoms of this being the culprit. Well that did not fix it. Also after the truck sat for a few hours while I went to get the crank sensor it did start for a few seconds when we first returned.

Welcome to the forum

Battery light comes on when engine RPMs are under 400, as alternator is shutting off from low RPMs

Not sure how you are checking for spark but none of the "normal" ways will work on a Waste Spark system and thats what you have

Spark plugs are wired in series so won't spark if one wire is unhooked

Anytime you have a Crank but No Start on any engine/vehicle made after 1985 you need to do 50/50 test
Spray gasoline or ether(quick start) into the intake manifold
Try to start

If it starts and then dies you have a fuel delivery problem, engine is "out of gas"
If it doesn't fire/start then yes its a spark problem
50/50 instant results

Your symptom reads like the fuel pump died, and yes it can start working after dying but intermittant

The fuel pump will run for 2 seconds when you turn key on, but only for 2 seconds
But it runs for 2 seconds EACH TIME you turn key from off to on, so repeat as much as you need
It is not quiet you can hear the HUMMMM in the cab, turn the radio down, lol

You change fuel pump by tilting the bed up or sliding it back, 6 bolts and 3 screws

My dad says he's never had a problem checking for spark the way we did. Had fuel pressure at the shrader valve.

Which is why you do the 50/50 test, the test that was first used on the very first gasoline/spark engine in the 1880's, and used ever since, lol

Because there is ALWAYS a first time for everything.

Schrader valve is on the OUTSIDE of the engine, while its good to have fuel pressure on the outside has nothing to do with whats on the inside of the engine, fuel wise

So best test to determine if you have a spark or fuel issue on any and all gasoline engines is................................50/50
