2nd gen swap to 1st gen?
Hi,
I have a 1989 Ford Ranger 2.9 v6 4x2 with a bad A4LD Tranny..
The cost to rebuild the A4LD is more that what the truck is worth so I've been looking locally for another tranny that would fit (I've been told any ranger/explorer/mustang/aerostar from 1983 to 1994 would fit) if there are other options please tell me :)
I recently found a really cheap 1991 Ford explorer 4x4 with I'm pretty sure a 4.0 in it..
I'm not really truck savy at all so I would like to get a lot of input. what options do I have? Could I literally just swap the transmissions? Could I swap both the motor and transmission? Could I swap everything and make it a 4x4 conversion? I would like to get as much info as possible.

Welcome to the forum
A4LD from 1988-1994 were the same
The 2.9l and 4.0l engines used the same block so transmissions are interchangeable
You can swap engines as well, but you need to swap computer and engine wiring with the engine
A 4x4 has a different frame up front, 4WD was not a bolt on option, factory starts with a 4WD frame then builds out from there
You can rebuild a 2WD frame, welding, so you can then put front axle in
Lots of measuring needed to make sure of 4 wheel alignment
I often read that statement......"The cost to rebuild the ???? is more that what the truck is worth........"
In regards to transmissions and engines
But you need to look at it from a different perspective
If the vehicle is in good condition otherwise and you think you can drive it for another 5 years, 60 months, then $2,000 transmissions costs you $33/month
Then look at a replacement vehicle cost

You got a point...It's a rust free truck so maybe I will consider getting a manufactured transmission down the road. As of right now, swapping to the 4.0...The 4x4 a4ld's output shaft is longer than the 2x4. Could I just take it to a transmission shop and have them swap it?
