Right, my Ranger only has 9 HP and 10 Ft. Lbs.of Tq. more than the Taurus but that's just because it's newer.

gearing and tuning are probably the main reason for slight variations of HP/torque.

No need to be a jerk, I was just informing the OP that, year for year, there is no difference in power between a RWD Vulcan and a FWD Vulcan.

no, I had replied with a completely different tone (unmistakable) thinking he was being rude towards my post, after reading his I apologized through PM and then edited my reply.

hopefully i'll get the engine pulled this weekend, if i can get access to a hoist, and some advice as to how to use it properly. i don't have plans to reuse the block and am really unsure as to it's condition til i pull it. if the block appears to be in decent shape i am willing to part with it for a reasonable figure.

I ran the numbers for the cams. They are not the same they have diff profiles one cam number is 1278 and the other is a 1257. The cam for say a sable or a Taurus are the same but to a ranger its diff the truck cam has a grind more for low end trq and the sable or Taurus grind is more for fuel economy and smoothness. If u put the sable/Taurus engine in your truck it may work but the cam profiles are diff just so u know u could swap your old cam in to the other engine but don’t forget u also need to swap the lifters too once an engine is (broken in and the ring and lifter seat them self’s they should not be swapped to a diff cam) u can swap them over with no problem just make sure the lifter go on the same cam lobe. Also the profile of the cams is diff anof that the computer may pick up the difference and may not run right without a new tune in the pcm. Also I would swap over your rockers too, the 3.0 do come with diff ratios (1.5-1.6-1.7) so don’t take the chance and put your old rockers on it. As for the flex fuel parts u would need to swap over your injectors and fuel rail (very easy). The intake are also diff but that would be easily fixed by putting your old upper and lower intake on that engine (the lowers may be the same number # but you would already have it off to swap the cam) so why take the chance just put yours on. Also u should swap your old timing cover and your oil pan and exhaust manifolds too. Not trying to step on any one's toes but u should now this before you spend your money.

thanks so much!
i kinda figured there had to be some kinda difference ( i don't understand much at all about engines, but i do understand math pretty well. i just don't understand what the numbers mean in relation to reality. :) ) . i take it the longer rockers increase the stroke, creating a higher displacement without increasing the cylinder bore = more horse power? if so how can you know when you pull an engine what the internal components (cam sizes, etc...) are? VIN? i also think that my lower intake may need to be replaced also. i set it on a table and one corner sits a bit higher. i turned it several times thinking the difference may be due to the table top being warped, but the same difference in elevation occured at the same corner at eack movement . since it is an aluminum fitting can i just torque it back down, should i re-machine it, or just replace it?

the numbers mean = part numbers each part has its own number the easy way to find out what the engine has is the vin and also the engine code (it’s a vin for your engine normally on the block somewhere) and have a ford dealer parts department run it and if there a nice dealer they should be able to tell you what it has for parts
The rockers - most of the ones that have different ratios are all high-performance aftermarket parts - if you go to them u need to check for valve clearance to the piston
honestly if you don’t now that much about engine I would just transfer as much parts off your old engine just to be safe - but if you want to learn witch parts are interchangeable or witch parts give more hp you need to do lots of research and you will find your answers
For your question about your lower intake u can machine them but price will determine if u just replace it or fix it
Also if you go to your local book store they have all kinds of books on hp engines or repair manuals if you read those it should give you a basic knowledge of how an engine works and what can be done to make them perform better (I haven’t seen a book yet for the ford 3.0 yet) but any book will give the basics of what the parts look like and there proper name, they may not be a picture match but it should be close

Dang ! This is one awesome piece of info - I wish I would have seen it prior to the thread I started... I am looking at picking up a 2008 3.0 from a rolled ranger to install in my 1999 ranger - From what I see here - it will work if I just swap my upper and lower intake on the new engine. Does that sum it up?
