the 4.0 has almost 100 more stock horsepower than a 3.0.....and even a heavily modified 3.0 doesn't meet what a stock 4.0 puts out.....

OHV is only 160hp 225tq... While that is alot of torque it makes that to soon to be a racer. SOHC is set up more like a car engine with 207hp and 238hp but it gets its power much later. Here in this pic I found it shows the weak torque that a OHV has.
OHV is a slow turd compared to the SOHC IMO.

I tbink the OHV 4.0L would fall on it face when you race it, sure it has a lot more torque but I'm sure it still makes closer to that of the 3.0L when you get to 5,000RPMS. I can see how the 4.0L would seem faster as it has more torque off the line but it wouldn't have the same power when you race it. i think that the guys with a 4.0L OHV should get a video camera out and get a 0-60 or 0-70 or something and post it up. We can count the seconds and compare them to that of a 3.0L of an equal standpoint. Its not the best way but with everyone all over the place its going to be an easy way to make it work.

The pre-02 GTI 1.8T only had 150hp so it was slower.. I've played around with a manual TC and passed it enough to get in front and make my turn :)

My truck stock goes 0-60 in ~7 seconds, and I handed this guys *** to him so it must have been the 150hp verison. Id still like a shot at yours

Its not impossible for the 3.0 to beat the 4.0, but the 4 would have to be stock and the 3 HEAVILY moded. that is assuming of course that the bodies are the same on the trucks. if the 3.0 isnt moded- NO WAY!!! its simple physics- 2 trucks, same weight, one has 150 hp, the other 200. which one wins?!? the one with more power. NO QUESTION.

I did not put it to the floor until 15 mph because of some loose random gravel on the pavement where i started out at.
Can we get somebody to do the same with a stock 3.0? Auto? regular cab?

u guys arnt thinking about weight... every 100 pounds is supposebly 10 hp... Im driving a single cab 2wd weighs 3000 pounds. vs a 4wd, 16 inch wheels, 30 inch tires, 4wd, ext cab, brush guard all that weighs alot.. now i got maybe 170 hp with everything i got on it. Hes got 205. His truck was a 02 ish model the sohc 4.0. Still beat im by a couple cars. I test drove a 2000 4.0 the other day it didnt impress me at all. stomped it at 30 when it kicked down to first didnt push me in the seat at all.. U guys hype the 4.0 up to much. I like my little engine does good for what it is. built alot more solid than the 4.0 .

Some food for thought...

2004 3.0:
HP = 154 @ 5200 rpm
TQ = 180 @ 3900 rpm
2004 4.0:
HP = 207 @ 5250 rpm
TQ = 238 @ 3000 rpm
that is a newer 3.0 vs. an aging 4.0 right there..........you would be lucky to get 53 HP/58 TQ out of a modified 3.0....with bolt on parts......now yes you can get into major custom internals.....
or how about this:
1997 3.0:
HP = 147 @ 5000 rpm
TQ = 162 @ 3250 rpm
1997 4.0:
HP = 160 @ 4200 rpm
TQ = 225 @ 2800 rpm
now with a 1997, you probably will get the 13 HP to equal the 4.0, but no way you will make up the 63 TQ.......
the torque is what wins the race.......not HP....

btw maurice, you need to specifiy which 4.0L you are talking about- saying "4.0" is very general.

with what someone will spend on the 3.0 to make it have close to the same #'s as a 4.0 (all), i can spend on my 4.0 and have almost 275 HP.....i would guess-ta-mate that my truck now with what i have done to it is running around 230 HP.....and i still have headers, cam, intake, and throttle body that are bolt on parts.....and if i want to go farther, i can get a stroker kit to bore my block out to a 4.5L.......which i would think would put the 4.0 over 300 HP...

i dont kno if anyone has mentioned this, but u have to take in account- the hp at the wheels... ya the 4.0 is puttin 207 out but that's at the flywheel, deff not to the wheels-the 3.0 is puttin somewhere around the 150 range at the flywheel, but 120-130ish hp at the wheel it's self. just my 2cents lol
