5.0 swap

I own a 2000 ford ranger xlt, 3.0 2x4, nothing crazy, but I will be shipping off for the navy on june 30th and when I get back I would like to do a 5.0 4x4 swap on it, any ideas on where I could source a 5.0 and how hard the job would be? I know you can do a explorer swap but I wanna have 4x4 option, any ideas? no suggestion will do harm, just looking for tips

Well.............4WD is not an "option" added/bolted on to a 2WD vehicle at the factory

A Ranger 4x4 has a different frame than a Ranger 2WD, so a 4x4 Ranger starts with the frame on the assembly line, then parts are bolted on to that

But you CAN do anything.............
You will need to box the front frame rails, one of the big differences, to strengthen the frame in the front, then you will need to measure 3 times and weld once, lol, to add the brackets for the front axle, you need to get this right or vehicle will "crab" down the road because front and rear wheels are not aligned
So that part is hard if you are not a welder

For the 5.0l swap you will buy a complete Ford Explorer with a V8 and 4WD, 1996-2001 are the only ones that work, and swap over engine/trans, computer and wiring harness, exhaust and several other bits and pieces

Alright I see, Well I am not the best at welding but I do have two close family members who have been welding their entire life and said they would be willing to help, see I thought you would have to weld on a few thing because of the frame difference,
also wondering where I could find rear leaf spring U-bolts for my new 4" lift, everything fits but the U-bolts and I cannot seem to find any that'll fit that are not really costly? Thank you for the help!!

also wondering if a AWD swap would be easier than a 4wd swap? what would the difference be?

long u-bolts are "custom" parts, not "off the shelf" so will cost alot more

AWD uses a fluid coupler in transfer case for the front drive shaft, these have a 30/70 power split
4WD uses direct gear drive in transfer case, so 50/50 power split

For on-road driving the AWD is fine, can be used full time, you don't want to use 4WD on dry pavement
For off-road 4WD is better
